"But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, for they are spiritually discerned." (1 Corinthians 2:14)

What does Paul mean by saying things of the Holy Spirit are spiritually "discerned"?

Thanks :)

Ah.  I think I know where I went wrong previously (other thread).  I was incorrectly attributing "for they are spiritually discerned" to the unbeliever rather than to "the things of the spirit of God".

Is that the ESV interpretation?

Here is the NIV:

1 Corinthians 2:14

New International Version

14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.

I quoted my New King James Bible.

The New American Standard  says "appraised".

To me, discernment means telling the difference between one thing and another.

The Holy Spirit makes us able to tell the difference between a thing of Satan's spirit, versus a blessing of the Holy Spirit.

So, a person who is "natural" is not functioning in the Holy Spirit; and so he or she cannot tell what is of God's Holy Spirit.

I would like to note:

We are talking about discerning "things" > not only ideas. In the Holy Spirit there are things of God, which we can actually experience.

With God, we can tell the difference, for example, between feeling good about a pleasure, versus being with God in His peace.

"And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment." (Philippians 1:9)

So, to me this means there is "love" which has "knowledge and all discernment". And now I notice how this says "all" discernment!

So, we could be talking about the only "love" that has discernment. Which love would this be, then, if only one love in existence has true and trustworthy discernment?

Well, we do need to discern who to trust and who not to trust. And Jesus clearly tells us not to judge by people's outward show and say-so >

"'Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.'" (John 7:24)

And with Jesus it is possible to judge reliably. But Jesus does want us to love any and all people; so He will not have us just judging about who to love and who to condemn, or who is good enough for us to love and who isn't.

But in His love we can have discernment so wrong people don't fool us with their acting; plus, in God's love we have our Creator's creativity for how to love each person.

So, then, in God's love we have discernment for who to trust, and how to trust each one, plus discernment for how to love each person.

But this discernment is in God's love which we have in the Holy Spirit through Jesus > Romans 5:5. This is God's all-loving love which has reliable discernment > we can not have this in worldly and selfish loving, then > "if you love those who love you, what reward have you?" Jesus says, in Matthew 5:46.

So, in God's all-loving love we can share His discernment with Him, making sure with Him so we are not fooled by people's acting and false reporting!

And our Apostle Paul has prayed for us to keep increasing in this love's ability to judge well >

"And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment." (Philippians 1:9)

So, this has already been prayed for us, even if we have not been thinking of this :)

Only in God's love can we have His light for evaluating any person in a caring way, and His love's light has us seeing circumstances the way love has us seeing things.

Meanwhile, there are people who fall in selfish love which has them in the dark - - as they only or mainly care about what they want to get for themselves; then, as they try to use people for what they want . . . they make interesting discoveries about the ones they have tried to use and maybe married. Then they blame and argue.

But the love with "all discernment" is God's all-loving love. And we have this only through His Son Jesus.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

      Shalom everyone,

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
