Children should be old enough to consent to the piercing and to care for it properly.

@Thewhitedove Girls seem to have more of a flair for caring for their holes, right? Although for young men and boys studding one's earlobes became regarded as a very masculine thing: seeing himself 'as a tough guy now...gotta do the ear piercing like the other tough guys', yet as you may be obliquely implying it does not always go with being prepared to care for the holes properly.

This is likely why a lot of moms get their daughters' holes put in when they are probably a bit younger than their sons - if the son's want them.

@Thewhitedove So do you think that it's likely often the case that if moms have it - 1 or 2 pairs of ear piercings - daughters will sooner or later want some also, like mom? (and maybe similarly for a son if his dad has studded his ears also...)

My mother didn't have her ears pierced but I wanted mine done, just because everyone has them done and I like earrings. I was 9 but they closed over, then I went again at 13

@Thewhitedove So, kind of, double pierced? or maybe the same holes enlarged....

I have three holes in each earlobe, had them since the 70s ...I think it's now considered mainstream

 I think what the quote says about extra holes being mainstream is pretty accurate.

It used to be more fashionable for men to have ear piercings years ago.

Anyway, I think that part of the difference it made in terms of permanent trends, when boys and men started having 1 earring in 1 ear, or else 1 each side, a lot of girls and women would increasingly have at least 2 each side. (Kind of, not to be outdone by the men, so to speak...)

@Thewhitedove Willa referred to some significant social history when she referred to the painful clip-ons that would be worn several decades back. It's clear why the widening custom of piercing instead was very strongly welcomed.

Makes a lot of sense to have the holes put in and being done with it.

I would think the age of one's first sailing across the international date line would be appropriate.

@Neighbor I have a male cousin who was a sailor, who would go round the world. He has worn an earring for decades.

Originally for sailors it seems to have been in a sense an oblique allusion to Christianity.

If someone was doing hazardous work overseas, the precious metal in the earring was supposed to pay for the sailor to have what was regarded as a decent, Christian burial (rather than being just thrown over the side of the ship).

@AFlameOfFire

"I dont know how that verse relates to farouks ear piercing thread."

I wasn't sure, either...........

(In fact there seem to be various verses about it, in one way or another.)
