Yes, this is presented by the world in a positive way as it supposedly makes advances in medicine; while acknowledging the controversial nature of the research. China remains overwhelmingly godless, so it comes as no surprise where the work is going forward.

Novel was better, as is typical, but the movie was clever. https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B079Z1MH7R/ref=atv_hm_vid_c_vJb2Rv_1_1

Does anyone remember the official announcement of the creation of “super soldiers?” These super soldiers are not modified skeletal machinery like in the movies. The ideal super soldier is more potent and faster, needs less food and sleep, has enhanced and modified physical senses, and uses AI technology to make decisions. In other words, genetically modified. It is no secret some of the best legal minds have met to work out the definitions and legalities of enhanced humans. The world is getting scarier by the day. Take a look at the numerous YouTube videos of robots and artificial intelligence. It is only what we are allowed to see and where we are going, and it is near the point where a robot and human will be indistinguishable. Numerous leaks of Google and others have problems with AI becoming sentient. I see the many threats facing us in addition to the above, threats of nuclear war from Putin, North Korea, and Iran—the collapsing global economy and aggression—everything from terrorism to wokism, from counterculture to celebrating abominations. It leaves no doubt that we are living in perilous (dangerous) times, as the Bible predicts.

There are all sorts of potential problems with this technology. Yes, it worked to our benefit with vaccines, but it could also lead to harmful things. The story you saw was about a Japanese biologist who sequenced the tardigrade genome and discovered that specific Dsup proteins which protect the DNA of the little animals. They did not "cross" human and tardigrade DNA. They inserted one specific gene for Dsup into the DNA of some human cells. Tardigrades are resistant to radiation, but it's not clear that the Dsup proteins could be made to work for humans. It does work for specific human cells in cell cultures: Kunieda tested this with lab-cultured kidney cells, genetically engineering these cells to produce Dsup themselves. "The human cells that made Dsup saw a reduction of around 40 to 50 percent in the DNA damage caused by X-rays compared with control cells,” Kunieda noted. When RNA was used to sabotage the Dsup gene, the protection against radiation disappeared completely. This proved that Dsup is the key factor. Assuming this ability can be successfully recreated in all the cells of a fully-grown organism like us, it could make human beings and other animals immune to radiation. "It could be helpful for space flight, radiotherapy and radiation workers in the far future,” Kunieda believes. That's a big if, of course. https://futurism.com/the-secret-is-out-scientists-figured-out-how-tardigrades-became-immune-to-radiation We just don't know what all the consequences of having a Dsup gene in humans might be. Decades of work would be needed in what would be for most humans, a rather small benefit. A small decrease in cancer rates would be the most significant potential benefit. It would be more useful for humans in space, of course. That's why bioethics has become such a hot topic and why there are increasingly detailed rules for researchers in this area. Nevertheless, if something is possible, someone will eventually do it. And therein lies the danger. This particular one, not so much. Total flop. But this was partially due to Stalin's outlawing Mendelian genetics and Darwinism, in a massive purge of science from which Russian biology is still trying to repair. China might indeed be thinking along the same lines, but with much better chances of succeeding. Still, things aren't as simple as we thought they might be a few decades ago. In 1970, Alvin Toffler wrote Future Shock, predicting among other things, the incipient ability of humankind to alter their own genetic characteristics. We're still stumbling around, just on the margin of even repairing genetic disorders. The other issue is that most genetic alterations that would make a better soldier would make a better human generally. Assuming that it didn't mess up something else in the body. One of the issues is that everything is connected to everything else and it's hard to predict what the consequences of altering specific DNA or adding new DNA might be Edited April 3, 2023 by The Barbarian
