It even flips from time to time. A record of this is kept in the rocks, which align magnetic particles according to the magnetic field. If it went away completely, we'd be seeing a lot more damage from solar radiation, but it's not going away. Dear Mr M, The Earth's magnetic field has reversed many, many times. While the mechanism isn't fully understood, and the timescales vary widely, in this present geological era they are happening once every few hundred thousand years. We are overdue for one of these reversals - the last one happened about 780,000 years ago. The reversal of the earth's magnetic field is captured in ferromagnetic rocks, usually ones formed through volcanic activity. When the rock forms, iron atoms in the rock align themselves in the direction of the earth's magnetic field and the rock becomes weakly magnetised. It is very easy to measure in present day that this has happened. There is no correlation in the fossil record to extinction events with these reversals. Cation and anion Ions, fallen canopies, and even reversal of spin direction, plus a complete standing still; yet I am told "Do not worry about tomorrow for today has enough troubles of it's own." My Lord has gone to prepare a place for me, me personally along with place for many, and He will come for me when His Father declares it to happen. That is my security. While this may be the time of the signs ( I believe it is) there's also seemingly confirmation within the signs, that the hope that is certain is coming and will come rapidly when it happens. Time to be bold in sharing of the gospel of Jesus and not fear of "things" that are temporal. For therein is the hope that is certain, eternal life, beyond this day in the corruptible flesh.
