When the Lord says, Esau I have hated, it is not the man, it is the nation that rejoiced when Jerusalem and His Temple were destroyed by Babylon. Psalm 137:7 Remember, O Lord, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, "Raze it, raze it, even to the foundation thereof". 2

Just a day or maybe two days ago I was pondering that passage and wondering what it could mean. Your explanation seems to make sense to me.

Profound statement he makes. Gen 33 8“What do you mean by sending this whole company to meet me?” asked Esau. “To find favor in your sight, my lord,” Jacob answered. 9“I already have plenty, my brother,” Esau replied. “Keep what belongs to you.” 10But Jacob insisted, “No, please! If I have found favor in your sight, then receive this gift from my hand. For indeed, I have seen your face, and it is like seeing the face of God, since you have received me favorably. His gift was a bribe to hopefully soften the expected blow. Read it in context.
