If it happens before/after service outside of the sanctuary, I wouldn't be offended. The proper way to handle it is this: Pastor: For those of you who are interested, we'll be holding a fundraiser selling sandwiches. There is a sign-up sheet in the vestibule where that you can place your order. You can see Sister Bertha afterwards to give her your money. Sister Bertha, please stand and tell us what the donations will be used for....... That, to me, is the proper way of handling it!

But I find passing the collection plate during church offensive too. How can you give in private when all eyes are on you during the offering part of the service. Worse yet, those who put in a bill and then take change out of the plate, lol!

That's unthinkable. I would raise the issue as well. Just remember to be respectful.

If it's happening during the service, then I don't agree with it at all. That time should be dedicated to the Lord's service, not for little fund raisers. t. I agree, it takes away from worship. Maybe in the bulletin instead.

For me, it is a Mary / Martha issue. Mary knew when it was time to worship while Martha toiled away. [Luke 10:38-42] The work must be done BUT in the right time and place. When we enter the sancturay of the God, we are in HIS presence. It is the time for worship, not work. Maybe all that is needed is for Mary to give Martha a gentle reminder? Maybe all that is needed is for Mary to give Martha a gentle reminder? Um, what exactly are you guys trying to say?? Are you insinuating I might plow in like gangbusters with a slight attitude? Moi? Thanks so much to all of you for your feedback. I will approach the Pastor (gently and respectfully, lol - start praying) about it. It really was so offensive. Wayne, I will use something you said in your post that really hit the nail on the head. (About entering in and being in HIS presence)

I would not be to hasty to speak out. Check who put the sheet in the clip board. And GENTLY, VERY GENTLY, raise the issue with that person. Compliment them on the fact that they want to raise money for a good cause. But tell them of the bad timing. Accentuate the positive! Illuminate the Negative. I am part of a Church Plant that does not yet have a permanent venue. And I am already thinking about Christmas, bowling, and kareoke nights. So the ideas have merrit. The timeing however needs work. As to the issue of Collection plate passing. I agree. It should be saved untill the end as people walk out. I am a stand-up comic. And it breaks my heart to see a comic, who is performing, get trampled on by people debating who had how many beers and Mozzerella sticks. I for one ALWAYS order 2 diet sodas and pay in advance. And I do confess to being a change maker on occasion.
