At my church home they teach that we should tithe. I know Christians that believe that tithing is just an Old Testament law that was donw away with in the New. Is this so? Or is it still something God commands of you?

I think it is very important that we give back to God on a regular basis to show Him our gratefulness to everything He has given us and is giving us. Also giving of time and/or finances to God helps to extend His kingdom. You could be paying for someone who doesn't know Jesus to have a bible to read so they have the opportunity to come to know God, and thats just one example. God wants us to be wise with both our time and money. Heres a quick thought, go into your house and look at where your money has been spent. Are the things you spend your time and money on glorifying to God, or to something else.

Just something for you to think about.

Good considerations from Aviator227!

That's a good message for all of God's people! "Where does your money go?"

Excellent statements on the subject of tithing.

The book of Hebrews has some exellent material on tithing (an Old Testament principle) and how it is still applicable to paying tithes to Jesus, our High Priest, who sits in Heaven and receives them.

Hebrews 7 expounds on tithing. But to really get a grasp on Hebrews 7 you have to read from chapters 1 through 13. Hebrews is a very spiritual book based on many of the Old Testament principles given to God's people and how those principles relate to Jesus Christ, our Saviour, today.

May God reveal His Word unto you in Christ through the Holy Spirit.

Peace.

The Word says in James, if someone is in need and you have then give.No certain amount is specified, just give. We need to remember we are not only family but members of the same body. A regular routine of giving to your home church is a great thing but often God will send someone to us because He knows we can help. Pray to be sensitive to His leading. There is great blessing in the obedience of generosity. The Pastors and church leaders sometimes knows better who or what has a need so giving tithes or offering is a way to meet that need.

I think we should be careful using the word "tithe" when we talk about our offerings to the church.

Tithe is an old testament law. It includes 27% total giving.

10% to church, 10% to the festivals 7% to the widows ( something like that)

If you follow the tithe law, then you are bound to follow ALL the old test. laws.

What I put in the collection plate at church is an offering not a tithe.

Part of the Tithing thing is an ownership thing....

The earth is the Lords and all who dwell there in....

Paying Tithes acknowledges God's ownership of all the earth...

Ownership is established by restricted usage...... we could even look at it as paying rent..... or a toll....

if you own land, lots of land, thousands of acres, and some one drives across it, it still belongs to you, but, if they continue to drive across it, and you do not have it fenced off, or you do not do something to control access, or use of the land, you can lose the land from your own personal use.....

in Oklahoma, if you tend land for a period of time, you can petition to have it declared yours ( kind of like squatters rights )...... lets say that there is 50 feet between your house and your neighbors, and the property line is at the 25 foot mark, but you allow you neighbor to use 40 foot of the 50 and do not charge rent, and he tends it, it can become his land...... even though you originally owned it....

owning it controls visitation, or access or just allows control over it.....

renting a person has only partial control over it, and the owner is actually the one that controls it.....

God also has other controls set in place.... the 7th day, the 7th year, the 50th year, so forth and so on...

paying Tithe also shows respect and trust and honor....... and is a blessing in its self.....

as far as the laws, we are to continue to follow all the laws..... the only thing that has been done away with, is that those that are under the Blood of the Lamb, are free from the penalty of the law.... which is death...... once we become one with Christ, we will want to do God's will and do what pleases Him... which is also following the laws..... if we do not follow the laws, we are continuing to live in sin, and that does not please our Father......

offerings are separate from Tithes..... tithe means 10%.... offering can be what ever amount a person chooses.... but if not 10% does not meet the tithe status....

the Tithe goes to advance the Gosple of Jesus Christ......

offerings go toward other things needed....

Though tithing is not specifically called for in the NT, we have this principle to live by:

"Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." 2 Corinthians 9:6,7

Ten percent is a pretty good place to start.

I used to believe in tithing but did an in depth study into it and here it is Tithing, Is It for Today

I do believe that tithing is a good thing if you can do it. I also believe that when we become a believer, everything we own belongs to God and we must do it that way. If he tells you to give 5% to the church, then do it, maybe He'll tell you to give 90% to the church and if you just tithe, you'll be in disobediance to Him.

God bless,

Nate

hmmmm

i have an idea.....

let us all just forget the giving thing all together.....

in a peticular church fellowship i know of, ( true ) if every active member ( these are the people that come an average of twice a month and are paper work members, not those that attend but are not members, and not those that are paperwork members that are not attending or are unble to attend... just those that hold a voting membership that attend on a regular basis ) would give only $12.00 a week, that the annual budget constrainst would be exceeded..... ( this was for the building maintenance, payrole, and utilities, and insurance, this does not include any outreach programs, missions, or any other expense) this would be for the bare minimum cost of existance.....

this peticular church fellowship is failing..... drying up.... dying...... the number of people there and the income level of these same people if only half would tithe ( thats right, half ) they would be a growing church fellowship instead of a dying one.... there would be money for missions, outreach and other things, helping those in need, this church fellowship is not even keeping its promises to the Ministorial alliance or other obligations......

at the time of these figures, the lowest paid person that was a paperwork member, was earning $250 a week, and tithing..... most of these people are in the 70,000 a year and higher bracket.....

tithing?

let me see how i can say this.....

if we are not giving in accordance with our earnings, then i am sure God can ajust our earnings to match our giving......

all i know is that when people tithe, things happen..... and they are blessed..... no matter if they tithe on 100 dollars, or 5000 dollars..... or even a million.....

I have seen children giving better then adults....

I know that Tithing can be hard when a person is making a hundred thousand a year.... that would be 10thousand in tithes..... 10 grand is a lot of money..... so maybe God can help out there.... and make it so that these people can afford to tithe.... like for instance, drop their tithe amount to lets say 120 dollars a year instead of 10 grand a year.....

some say tithing is for the birds.....

who is taking care of the widows/widowers, and the orphans???? ( asked in another thread )

it is social services.... the state.... it is suppose to be the CHURCH..... thats right.... the Church is suppose to take care of our brothers and sisters....... not the state......

if you do not wish to tithe.... then dont..... that is your choice......

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
