I know this is probably more of a rant than a topic of any actual worth to discussion, but I felt I needed to make a post. I don't know how others feel about this, and I'd like people's opinions.

First, just to give a bit of background on my internet-boards history. I've been a member on various message board for about 2 years now (I joined my first message board in April 2005). Since then, I've been to half a dozen different boards, and they all have different styles of posting etiquette. The first board that I joined, which is still the one I frequent most often, has a fairly tight code of conduct in regards to posts. In order to promote the best discussion possible on a topic, this board has "spam" rules to stop people from responding with one-word or one-smilie responses.

Since then, i have joined a few other forums, including this one, and I have seen that many people have a tendency to reply to a post or a thread with something as simple as (just as one example):

:taped:

I do understand that different boards have different codes of conduct, but I've never been able to get used to seeing a person post such a simple reply. To me, it doesn't really seem to add anything to the discussion, and seems only a way to boost a person's post count while appearing to participate in discussion, especially when the reply quotes a massive post that takes several seconds (or more) to scroll through, just to add a smilie, or a one-word comment such as "agreed" or "well said" (or on Worthy - something like "Amen").

The first forum that I belong to seems to have a higher quality of posts than most other forums I've been on, because it actively stops people from making remarks that add nothing to the quality of the debate.

I'm not making this post to question the current TOS at WorthyBoards - please do not take this as such. I'm just seeking opinions on what people think about one-word replies to threads. Do they add to the discussion? Are they required? Or do they just take up space?

Thoughts and comments?

~ Regards, PA

I would not characterize them as SPAM. They are the equivalent of a nod or amen in a discussion between 2 people. I don't think we want to get in the business of deciding whose posts add value to a conversation.

I think that an emoticon can express everything you want to say about a matter.

If I have nothing to add to the discussion, but totally agree with the previous post, then I will use  . As EricH says, it is like a nod of agreement in a discussion. I'm happy with that!

I agree. Consider that in real life, sometimes that is all the conversation between men that happens. A nod here, a tweek of the head, a lifting of the eyebrow, lopsided smile, frown. A lot of men do most of their "talking" that way. Oh and sometimes we even throw in a hand gesture. :whistling:

:o
