He would probably like to have a nickel for every time I have quoted at him, 'Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.' (Btw, we are working our way through a book on the American Civil War right now.) There is some great historical fiction written by good writers who do their research. On the Civil War, Jeff Shaara and his father wrote a great trilogy that I am sure you've heard off: God's & Generals, Killer Angels and The Last Full Measure. The father died but Jeff continued writing. So far he put out a series on the Revolutionary War, the Mexican American War, World War I and now he's working on a trilogy on WWII. Great books...all of them...and pretty accurate to the true story. He does his research as far as I can tell. Regardless, sometimes history told in story form is much more intriguing for a young person than a dry history book.

People are very much stuck in "here and now" mode, and have little interest in the people who helped shape the past. The education system in the US has been "dumbing down" for years, and this is the result. It would seem the education situation may be similar in the UK. Here's something frightening: A month or so ago I was in a conversation with a college student who mentioned studying WWII. He had no idea who Hitler was! I've known college students who can't even spell on a 6th. grade level.
Guest
One in four Britons don't believe wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill existed One in four Americans don't think Britian exists And I've known college students who couldn't do a simple integration much less find a derivative (Four years ago I couldn't spell engineer now I are one!)
