Alfred Russel Wallace, a British biologist, kind of jump started (modern) evolutionary science and forced Darwin to publish his work early; in the end they both co-authored an article outlying some evolutionary principles. He independently came up with evolution. 2. No, he was very spiritual and very outspoken about it too. It cost him reputation in the scientific community and hindered his career. 3. I suppose, but Wallace was not an atheist by any stretch of the imagination. 4. Possibly, but one of the good things about the scientific process is that it tries to get rid of biases. Besides, Wallace independently came up with the theory and he was definitely not an atheist. There's a big difference in spiritualism and believing the bible of a Creator God.
