Throughout the Bible, the Lord is given names and descriptions to describe His nature, character, provision, etc. utilizing references and symbols of that land and time (Shepherd, Strong Tower, Sword and Shield, etc.). Nothng wrong with all that, except in some cases we need to be taught what the symbolism meant in order to understand what this is saying about the Lord. For example, the whole illustration of the Lord as a shepherd only truly makes sense once you understand how a shepherd back then cared for his sheep, then you can see how it all fits (i.e. shepherds guarded sheep pens with their own bodies - thus the illustration Jesus gave about being the "door for the sheep"). So, I was wondering if we were to describe the Lord only using terms our people and our culture understand, what terms would you use? As an example, I heard one praise song that used the traditional names and descriptions for God in there, (like the title: "You Are My Rock"), but within there was added: You are the eye of the storm. So, there's an example. Any others?

I also got it from a song.... You are my oxygen... Jesus is the very thing that keeps me alive in every aspect of my life (physical, mental, spiritual etc.) and is as essential to me as oxygen. Maybe it's because I'm used to those descriptions, like my shepherd, and it just packs a bigger punch to me anyway. I love to describe Him as King and Lord. A role model that is desperatly needed today. Jos 5:13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? Jos 5:14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? Jos 5:15 And the captain of the LORD'S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.
