Elijah = John the Baptist?

Mal 4:5  Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:

Mat 16:14  And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

Mat 17:10  And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?

Mat 17:11  And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.

Mat 17:12  But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.

Ok so from this study I am understanding that John the Baptist was Elijah? Now what i can't remember is had Elijah died at any point? Was this a second life for him then? Or was John not really Elijah just a man like him? A bit confused here, any help would be appreciated.

Lu 1:17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

I would only add:

John 1:23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

CONTRAST THIS TO:

Matthew 17:11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.

We actually see that Jesus is speaking of Elijah coming "twice". Once in the person of John the Baptist, and the next will be in the persons of the "two witnesses".

I will add this though. John worked no miracle. Jesus Christ did.

Elijah rendered miracles by the power of the Holy Spirit.

First:

Zechariah 6:13 Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace (LOOK BELOW FOR THE VERSE REGARDING THE DOVE) shall be between them both.

Matthew 3:16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

John 3:34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

This is interesting. When the Solomon temple was built and everything was finished, the shikanah glory came to rest in the Holy of Holies.

But we don't see that occuring with the Nehemiah reconstruction, and this is basically what was standing when Jesus came on the scene.

Now when we examine the Gospels, everyone was astonished at the "miracles" that Jesus was performing. This apparently hadn't been happening in Israel since the days of Elijah & Elisha. The reason is that everyone was asking whether JB or Jesus was the Elijah which was for to come.

Nowhere in the gospels are miracles done, except by Jesus, UNTIL Jesus "Breathes upon His disciples" and sends them out. Then of course we are told that "greater things than this shall ye do" and He was referring to Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples - the antitype of which the type was the Solomon temple.

So the reason I do not believe the "glory of God" was upon the Nehemiah temple was because it was being held back to be put on the Son of God, as noted above.

P.S. One thing I must add is that I believe the "glory of God" to be related to the "ark of the covenant", but I haven't done sufficient study on this to understand it completely yet.

I in no way believe that John the Baptist was Elijah. But I do believe that Elijah will be one of the two witnesses, during the tribulation.
