Dad's have to be the "heavy" and you are filling in for someone who isn't there now.

Mom's are about nurturing and try to shield kids from anything painful. That's natural, though most mothers are much better moms than the one you've described. It sounds like she is abdicating her responsibility to avoid conflict with the child. It probably has to do with pain/shame/guilt over the loss of a father or something along those lines; but there is no good excuse for allowing this child to go unsupervised at that age.

The unfortunate thing is that we both know she is going to put all the blame for these consequences on you, on the owner of the property, on the legal system, etc, etc, etc. The kid is going to be shielded from this also.

Maybe, just maybe, this will punish the mother enough to where she will start watching him better.
