Thomas Jefferson knew because he-himself studied the previous failed attempts at government.

He understood actual history, the nature of God, his laws and the nature of man. That happens

to be waaay more than what most understand today.

Jefferson really knew his stuff.

A voice from the past to lead us in the future:

John F. Kennedy held a dinner in the white House for a group of the brightest minds in the nation at that time. He made this statement:"This is perhaps the assembly of the most intelligence ever to gather at one time in the White House with the exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone."

When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe .

Thomas Jefferson

The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.

Thomas Jefferson

It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes.

A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world.

Thomas Jefferson

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.

Thomas Jefferson

My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.

Thomas Jefferson

No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.

Thomas Jefferson

The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves

against tyranny in government.

Thomas Jefferson

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Thomas Jefferson

To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.

Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson said in 1802:

“I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies..

If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by

deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property - until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.”

Which just goes to prove that smarts isnt everything.

Jefferson attempted to rewrite the bible to remove the miracles. His view of Jesus was lacking.

I would agree with that.... I know a lot of smart people who do dumb things.... I've noticed for a really long time, that for ever college degree a person gets they seem to loose five to ten percent of thier common sense.

Thomas Jefferson believed that the only duties of the Federal Gov't. should be to protect the borders, maintain good foreign relations policies and deliver the mail. Talk about smaller gov't.

The man may have been worldly wise, but chopping all supernatural out of the bible makes him a heretic.

It is my understanding that the book that Jefferson wrote was not intended to be a Bible at all, but was a book for the Indians to teach them the ways that He (Jesus) expected them /us to live.... Origionally it did have some of the miracles in it, but it did leave out the virgin birth and resurection. It was not intended as a replacement Bible, it was more just a book about the life and teachings of Christ.

The book was more to get the Indian population settled down and more civilized.

It is my understanding that it was effective. Once the Indian population gained interest the missionaires introcuced them to the diety and resurection of Christ.

So, all in all it worked out. That's what I have read about it any way.... I personally do not know if Jefferson believed in the diety of Christ....... I should, but it's been a very long time since I read about him, and I find that too many Christians have problems with people like myself who question our founding fathers beliefs..... so I tend not to deal with it.

To be fair to Jefferson, his rejection of the miracles of Jesus is in keeping in line with the prominent theology of the time period. Most people probably don't know that higher criticism (a liberal approach to Scripture we got from Europe) really took hold in the "age of reason" as it was called, and most bible scholars in Jefferson's day did not believe in the miracles of Jesus (including his own resurrection) and sought to "demythologize" the Bible.

It was not long after Jefferson that Bible scholars also adopted the document hypothesis that ascribes the first five books of Moses to four anonymous authors (JEDP). Had it existed in Jefferson's day, he most likely would have adopted that as well. So cutting the miracles out of his Bible reflects the view of his day and was not something he did on his own.

that is not to justify any of that; merely to explain it.
