Anybody here drive a Jeep Cherokee? I am thinking of buying a used one (2000 or 2001 model year).

Has it been a reliable car for you?

What problems, if any?

What about fuel economy?

How much weight can it tow with a hitch?

If you had to buy again, would you?

My mother bought one brand new in 1995 Cherokee and drove it until 2 years ago when she gave it to me. I just have got rid of it.

Yes, it has.

What problems, if any?

Just the transfer case (4 Wheel drive unit) went out. Actually, it did twice. It was rather expensive to replace (about $1,400), but a 2WD would have no problems because they don't have transfer cases.

Some repairs are to be expected from an automobile that is about 10 years old and has over 100,000 miles on it.

Also, the radiator was rusting from the inside and the antifreeze was a rust colored. This may be partly due to living in St. Louis where it snows a lot and they put a lot of salt down and it rusts the underneath of cars a lot more than those who live in the south (like I do now living in Atlanta, GA).

What about fuel economy?

On a 18 gallon tank, I went about 300 miles on average.

How much weight can it tow with a hitch?

I don't know for sure, but my mom had a pontoon boat that was no problem towing behind the Cherokee. I am only guessing, but maybe 6-8,000 lbs?

Absolutely, I love Jeeps. I had a 1977 Jeep CJ7 (the AMC version of the Wrangler) and loved that as well.

Sure, most people I know that have Jeeps love them and would always consider buying another one.

I post on the Weather Channel forums and there are a lot of people there who drive Jeeps and love them very much.
