which commandments?

Does anyone here ever get the feeling that the commandments Jesus spoke of were not the ten commandments but the things he instructed the disciples and those who believed in him to go out and do?

Most people believe he meant all of the old testament laws and the ten commandents.

Any comments?

The Lord's commandments are the summation of the entire Mosaic law and the commandments. When asked which is the greatest commandment, the Lord responded that the greatest commandment is to love the Lord your God with all of your heart, with all of your sould and with all of your mind (Matt. 22:37). But then He also summarized the entire law and the prophets with these two essential elements: Love God, and love your neighbor as yourself.

If we take care of these two things, then the entire Law is fulfilled. Paul also emphasized this very matter in his letter to the Roman believers (Rom. 13:8-10).

Therefore, with respect to the Lord's commandments our primary responsibility in the church, and as believers, is to love (That is, to love with the love of God - Agape). This requires a deep, intimate, and continual seeking relationship with the Lord Jesus.

When Jesus spoke of commandments translated in your bible the original word was entole which means teachings, not nomos which means law.

Here is a good summary of Christ's commands from christadelphia.org:

Love your enemies: do good to them that hate you (Matt. 5:44).

Resist not evil: if a man smite thee on one cheek, turn to him the other also (Matt. 5:30-40).

Avenge not yourselves: rather give place unto wrath: and suffer yourselves to be defrauded (Rom. 12:18, 19).

If a man take away thy goods, ask them not again (Luke 6:29, 30).

Agree with your adversary quickly, submitting even to wrong for the sake of peace (Matt. 5:25; 1 Cor. 6:7).

Labor not to be rich: be ready to every good work, give to those who ask; relieve the afflicted (1 Tim. 6:8; Rom. 12:13; Heb. 13:16; James 1:27).

Do not your alms before men: Let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth (Matt. 6:1-4).

Recompense to no man evil for evil: overcome evil with good (Rom. 12:17).

Bless them that curse you; let no cursing come out of your mouth (Matt. 5:44; Rom. 12:14).

Render not evil for evil, or railing for railing, but contrariwise, blessing (1 Pet. 3:9).

Pray for them that despitefully use you and afflict you (Matt. 5:44).

Grudge not: judge not: complain not: condemn not (James 5:9; Matt. 7:1).

Put away anger, wrath, bitterness, and all evil speaking (Eph. 4:31; 1 Pet. 2:1).

Confess your faults one to another (James 5:16).

Be not conformed to this world: love not the world (Rom. 12:2; 1 John 2:15).

Deny all ungodliness and worldly lusts. If thy right hand offend thee, cut it off (Titus 2:13; Matt. 5:30).

Servants, be faithful, even to bad masters (Eph. 6:5-8).

Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate (Rom. 12:16).

Owe no man anything (Rom. 13:7,8).

In case of sin (known or heard of) speak not of it to others, but tell the offending brother of the matter between thee and him alone, with a view to recovery (Matt. 18:15; Gal. 6:1).

Love the Lord thy God with all they heart (Matt. 22:37).

Pray always; pray with brevity and simplicity; pray secretly (Luke 18:1; Matt. 6:7).

In everything give thanks to God and recognize Him in all your ways (Eph. 5:20; Prov. 3:6).

As you would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them (Matt. 7:12).

Take Christ for an example and follow in his steps (1 Pet. 2:21).

Let Christ dwell in your heart by faith (Eph. 3:17).

Esteem Christ more highly than all earthly things; yea, than your own life (Luke 14:26).

Confess Christ freely before men (Luke 12:8).

Beware lest the cares of life or the allurements of pleasure weaken his hold on your heart (Matt. 24:44).

Love thy neighbor as thyself (Matt. 22:39).

Exercise lordship over no one (Matt. 23:11).

Seek not your own welfare only, nor bear your own burdens merely, but have regard to those of others (Phil. 2:4; Gal. 6:2).

Let your light shine before men: hold forth the word of life. Do good to all men as ye have opportunity (Matt. 5:16; Phil. 2:16; Gal. 6:10).

Be blameless and harmless, as the sons of God in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation (Phil. 2:15).

Be gentile, meek, kind-hearted, compassionate, merciful, forgiving (2 Tim. 2:24; Titus 2:2; Eph. 4:32).

Be sober, grave, sincere, temperate (Phil. 4:5; 1 Pet. 1:13; 5:8).

Speak the truth every man with his neighbor: put away all lying (Eph. 4:25).

Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily as unto the Lord, and not unto men (Col. 3:23).

Be watchful, vigilant, brave, joyful, courteous, and strong (1 Cor. 16:13; Phil. 4:4; 1 Thess. 5:6-10).

Be clothed with humility; be patient toward all (Col. 3:12; Rom. 12:12).

Follow peace with all men (Heb. 12:14).

Sympathize in the joys and sorrows of others (Rom. 12:15).

Follow after whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report, virtuous, and praiseful (Phil. 4:8).

Refrain utterly from adultery, fornication, uncleanness, drunkenness, covetousness, wrath, strife, sedition, hatred, emulation, boasting, vainglory, envy, jesting, and foolish talking (Eph. 5:3,4).

Whatever you do, consider the effect of your action on the honor of God's name among men. Do all to the glory of God (1 Cor. 10:31; 3:17).

Reckon yourselves dead to all manner of sin. Henceforth live not to yourselves, but to him who died for you, and rose again (Rom. 6-11; 2 Cor. 5:15).

Be zealous of good works, always abounding in the work of the Lord, wearying not in well doing (Titus 2:14; Gal. 6:9).

Speak evil of no man (Titus 3:2).

Let the word of Christ swell in you richly (Col. 3:16).

Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt (Col. 3:8; 4:6).

Obey rules; submit to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake (Titus 3:1).

Be holy in all manner of conversation (1 Pet. 1:15, 16).

Give no occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully (1 Tim. 5:14).

God Man and Word Sower,

Thanks for the replies. Do you see now why I ask this question? It's always a tie between the answers I get.

1 for the law.........1 for his teachings

Hopefully we'll see if the tie gets broken if anyone else answers.

Thanks and God Bless

I believe, too, that all his commands are summarized in first loving God with all are heart, soul, & mind & our neighbor as ourselves. If we did that, we would not transgress on the others.

amazedbyhislove,

So you are all for the ten commandments but only by how Jesus summed all of them by the two most important ones, right?

I have a question for you since you agree with the law side, are you also torah observant? Observing Sabbath and feast days?

Because this is what I'm really trying to figure out once and for all....which is it, the law of Moses which includes the ten commandments. Or obey and observe all things taught to us by Jesus and the apostles?

praying,

pilgrim steve,

Thanks for the link, I read through it all and found it such a relief to know others think the law of Moses is null and void by faith in Jesus Christ.

So now it is still tied,

law............2 Jesus' teachings...............2

here we go again, can anyone break this tie?

Evangelina,

The whole Bible lines up with itself as it has one author. Galations shows us how the law was our schoolmaster to bring us to Christ. There is no way we could keep it. That is why we need Jesus.

GALATIONS 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

I believe when we are in the Spirit, acting out of love, we will not be breaking any of the other commandments. Of course we are to keep His commandments, though.....it is just we will not break them by acting in love at all times.

I don't know enough about the Torah to answer...

I may be confusing you more...I pray the Spirit of God will speak to your heart and show you their is really not a contradiction. Maybe someone else will be able to explain better.

Love in Christ,

Tracey

Evangelina,

The law (10 commandments and entire law-not to be separated) can not forgive sin or save anyone.

They are a tutor to point to Christ. When we have Christ we are born again and under the power of the Holy Spirit.

Most christians have not thought it through so they promote the 10 commandments. I do not keep the 10 commandments. I do not observe the 7th day Sabbath, I esteem every day alike (Romans 14) and am convicted that "Today" there is a rest for the people of God (Hebrews 4) Jesus is the Rest. He is my Sabbath. I rest in Him alone. By His grace and the Holy Spirit living in me I am convicted of sin and strive daily to love my neighbor as myself. This can only be done with the love of God in me.

The 2 sum up the whole thing. Jesus is the substance, the law is the shadow. :t2:

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
