Why is a child's Jewishness determined by his mother?

According to Jewish law, a child is considered a Jew if his mother is a Jew, whether his father is Jewish or not. If the mother is not Jewish, the child is not Jewish even though the father may be Jewish :cool2:

Because they didn't have DNA tests and they couldn't prove for sure who the father was.

Biblically and Historically it was always the father who determined the Jewishness more than the mother.  It wasn't until the dark ages with all the rape in anti-semetic Europe that often no one even knew who the father was, but of course you could always tell who the mother was, so this unfortunately became a rule that it was safer to go by the mother being Jewish to determine if the baby was.  Today, as far as I know, for purposes of citizenship, Israeli law recognizes someone with either a Jewish father or mother as being Jewish.

I have heard that "Jewishness" is really identified by the "mark" which Abraham and his whole household took as a sign of the covenant with God. This, of course, is circumcision. In Acts 15, some Jewish believers demanded that Gentile converts be circumcised and follow the law before they could be considered genuine believers inthe faith. But Paul contended that circumcision was not necessary. Obviously, circumcision is a primary factor in determinig a Jew's "Jewishness."

However, does the fact that many hosptials in America circumcise newborns as a matter of procedure, produce problems in the Jewish religion?

Not at all. Jewish people are very careful to have their children circumcized by a certifie Mohel. Since this is done in the presence of many withnesses, no one can claim they were circumcized ritually if they were not.

If a Jew was a Jew because his father was a Jew, Jesus could not have been a Jew!
