Can we follow Moses and Christ together? Why do we look into the Old Testament for direction!

Law and grace are two wings of the same board.   Jesus affirmed the Old Testament.  There is nothing in that abrogates the law of Moses.  In truth, it actually expands and augments the law of Moses.   What the New Testament teaches is that we are under a New Covenant, a new economy, not a new law.   God's laws never change. Murder, incest, adultery, stealing, lying, coveting, the occult, idolatry, fornication are all still sinful under the New Covenant.

No, one cannot follow Moses and Christ together. The law came by Moses but grace and truth by Jesus Christ. That said, one who follows Christ would have a lot in common with one who trusts in the law of Moses in truth.

The Old Testament is not to be something that we walk by but it is an excellent resource for understanding God and his plan. The mistaken argument people make is to start leading you toward obedience unto the law by asking ignorant questions like 'which of the commandments is it ok to break now?'. Very deceptive in nature. But many well meaning people fall into the trap of debating such things.

You cannot be under two covenants. That is the whole essence of the New Testament. Heb.1:1 this new dispensation is the time to walk in the ways of the commands of Christ. It is better than that of Moses bcos it does not carry curses. No one is cursed under the new covenant.

What exactly do you mean by "Old Testament"?

Psalms? Proverbs?

Isaiah?

They are a part of the "Old Testament" as well.

Would you not use the lives of Abraham, Joseph, Ruth, David, Samuel, Hezekiah, etc. for sermons and teachings?

And how could you ever understand the reason Jesus had to die on the cross for our redemption without looking into the Old Testament?

The NT doesn't say that.  There is curse for those who preach a different Gospel (Galatians 1) There is a curse on those who add to the book of Revelation.

This is not about living under two covenants.  But God's laws were not abrogated by the New Testament.  In fact many of them are repeated in the New Testament.  The New Covenant is not a new law,or a new set of commands.  The New Covenant is a new adminstration of God's laws.

The commandments against murder, stealing,lying, idolatry, sexual immorality, are still in effect.  God didn't change His laws.  He changed us and augmented out ability to keep His commandments by the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit.

The OT (in my opinion) enables us to have an overview of God's character, to study unfulfilled prophecies, to see God's plan unfolding and to understand the nature of God's morals. I don't follow the law of Moses. For example, the last time I looked, I hadn't left the hair on the sides of my head uncut. :laughing:

Basically, because scripture says to look into the 'OT' for direction.

2 Tim 3:16 All Scripture is ]inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for ]training in righteousness;  so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

To me it is unfortunate that the Tenakh is called the 'Old Testament' in most churches as the implication is that it is somehow separate, out of date, compared to the NT. It is scripture, inspired by God, as is the NT. Both put together are actually one book inspired by God, for instruction to mankind.

Were not under the law but the law does define what sin is-without sin there is no need for grace

Eph 2

11 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;
12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:
13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;
19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

Colossians 2:14

Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

Acts 13:39

And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

Colossians 2:14

Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

Acts 13:39

And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

Jeremiah 31:31

31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:

Im thinking like Oak and like The Patriot. A lot can and should be learned from OT.  Christians are not under OT laws though.
