Quit assuming. I can read for myself and make my own observations. God must have had slavery as part of his plan, and if you think the slavery of the US is different than that of the Bible you are deluded.

Because of serious internal injuries, doctors couldn't at that time reattach Thomas's hand. Instead, they attached his hand to blood vessels on his abdomen wall to "keep it alive". Two months later, the doctors removed it from his abdomen and reattached it to his arm. According to the report, UAB was the first in the nation to perform such a task! Exactly what the Bible said in 1490 B.C.! Keep feeding that hand blood, and it'll stay alive - the LIFE of the FLESH is in the BLOOD!

Don't you find that odd? What Moses wrote in 1490 B.C., the brightest minds man can produce, are just now discovering! How can that Amazing Book, written thousands of years ago, by men with such limited knowledge, be so far ahead the best mankind can produce in 6,000 years?

That verse is taken out of context. It is referring to spiritual matters. Not literally "all things" in the world...everywhere... (how would you prove "all things" anyway? lol)

1 Thess 5 seems to be a list of spiritual advices.  The one you quoted refers to prophecy.

Well, it took secular governments like England's and the US to abolish slavery. There was nothing in the bible to admonish us against slavery as practiced in the US (yes some slave holders were excessively cruel which the bible would admonish, but the institution was justified in the Book.)

 

The governments were not secular and the anti-slavery movement in America began with Christians (Under-ground railroad was a Christian movement).  The New Testament nowhere instructs folks to "make" slaves thereby validating it as an institution.  It instructs slaves and masters how to live in a time when slavery was a reality.  What hostiles demand from the Bible is historically implausible: that authors like Paul should denounce the institution and encourage revolt!  The Christian movement was extremely small and politically powerless.  The authors had to address the question of slavery situation by situation.  Philemon is a pretty powerful example of the ideal--that Christian masters should free their Christian slaves.  But that is not always possible; nor would immediate "freedom" always benefit a slave (okay, your free.........now what?  no home, no food etc.).  The Bible is extremely practical.

 

Nor can there be a distinction between secular and religious ethics at this point in time.  You are naming political entities that had almost 2,000 years of Christian ethics in their making.  It was bread in their bones.  It will take centuries of separation between Church and State before we can talk about "secular" ethics.

Enoch, once more, let’s return to the point.  You said that the Church held to geocentricism for so long because they weren’t reading the text closely.  My point is that, no matter how close you read the texts, you will never see heliocentricism.  That is all.  The Bible does not clearly teach heliocentricism.  At the time, the Church was well-advised to believe in geocentricism and nothing in the Bible contradicted that view.  And they were wrong.  Heliocentricism is right, and therefore passages that once supported geocentricism now had to be taken metaphorically.  Thus Biblical interpretation yielded to the sciences.  Your issue is (and always will be) that there can be no human component in the making of Scripture.  There is only ONE AUTHOR: the humans were just pens.  This is not only wrong historically and exegetically but also theologically.  When God redeemed Man he came as a Man.  When God wrote Scripture, He writes through men.

The RCC doesn't exist until we have something alternate to it.  All you had was, the Church.  Based on your logic, you would have to say that the Church ceased to exist from....when?  Constantine?  to Luther.

 

Galileo was part of that Church--he was a clergy member. It was his treatises that forced a different reading of Scripture.

 

Again, you have not shown me how the Bible teaches heliocentricism or at least clearly discourages the geocentric model.

 

You have your own definition of God-breathed.  You read, "all of Scripture is "God-breathed".  Then you think, what does it take for something to be "God-breathed".  Then you assign it a value based on your own criteria. It is a definition which no doubt gives you comfort--that does not make it true.

I know my bible.  I've studied it.  I know for a FACT that it's a different kind of slavery.  You are the one who is deluded and trying to find excuses for why you 'hate' a God you say you do not even believe in. 

Look I am a Christian so don't take this as if I am on Jerry's side.  You may know your bible, but do you know Roman history?  It is there that we learn what slavery was and was not like.  And when you study it you find that it was varied in its treatments of slaves.  Some slaves were treated almost like butlers; others were clearly treated viciously, no better than the worst of U.S. slave-owners.
