I skimmed over the story so I had to do some searching to find details.

Considering what was said, about lynching, I think expulsion was appropriate. I also think closing the fraternity was appropriate.

I hope the school does the same for any black on white racism too. That happens a lot and rarely gets addressed.

Oklahoma people in general are very upset with them.....   I understand that they were escorted off campus by the campus police.

It's my understanding that they only expelled the two that got it started and pushed it as far as it went.......     I just couldn't believe anyone in this state would be caught up in such a thing.  I have friends and along with myself have got up and left resturants where people were using the N word loudly....    and I have seen people asked to leave or be quiet......    it's embarrassing that things like that happen here, but we obviously don't approve of it.

I heard from a friend that the frat house on the OSU campus had southern flags in their house......    I'm sure that will be dealt with also.   This may be a problem with that fraternity in general..

you mean the confederate flags? as much as people see that as symbolic of racism, it really is a symbol of history. confederate flags are not illegal under any state law or city ordinances that i'm aware of. i understand that people might feel it's distasteful (although it certainly wasn't even when i was a teenager) but personally i believe that trying to bully people into silence regarding southern history is about the equivalent of trying to silence those who celebrate or otherwise acknowledge black history month... it simply shouldn't be done. history is history. we can't just choose to omit the parts that we don't like. the flag isn't just about the confederate war. we all agree that slavery being abolished was a good thing. but the flag stands for way more than a single war. it represents the southern states and states' rights, not slavery. and while it may be misused and abused by some historical hate groups, the meaning of the flag is anything BUT hateful. never has been, never will be. and in fact, the capitol building of south carolina still proudly flies the confederate flag.

so i'm not sure why or how you'd like the flag being displayed in a sorority house to be "dealt with". there's flat out nothing wrong with the flag being displayed, anywhere. heck, i used to have one hanging in my room. i think i snagged it from my brother when he got tired of it. i still see the flag on pickup truck windows here in texas. i am not, nor was i ever, racist. my brother isn't and wasn't racist. and having a southern cross flag in the back of a pickup doesn't make the driver racist.

there is plenty wrong with the attitudes of the white frat kids who were chanting about lynching black people. let's not stretch it to include things it shouldn't.

When dealing with things of this nature one picks up little hints from the things we decorate with.....  while it certainly isn't illegal, it can often be telling..

so.... that makes it something that should be "dealt with"? what kind of punishment should there be for hanging a southern flag in a southern state? i understand what you're getting at, but wanting it dealt with will perpetuate the misconception that it is a symbol of racism.

it's not.

Just an fyi, the confederate flag offends many who were affected by racism. Even if you do not mean it that way, is it wise to display it, knowing the brothers and sisters in Christ might be offended by it?

Blessings Lady

Living in South Florida for well over 35 years and coming from the "north" I have learned & have been subject to what that flag really means to many(not saying "all" but yes, many) and sad to say it often reflects nothing more than division, hatred, racism & bigotry,,,,,,,,,,perhaps it is not so where you live but waaaay down south(can't get any further) it is a very different story.Personally,I see nothing wrong with raising a flag but I have come to see it in a different light, from something I was not raised with and a complete new world I never knew existed until I moved down south,,,,,,,,,,

I love it down south,I do not live in an area where you can just feel the contempt for northerners etc,,,,, but I know them well,,,,,,,it does exist & they need our prayers                                                      With love-in Christ,Kwik

i know it does. but my point is that the flag is not, and never was, a symbol of racism. it has been denigrated in our society by people who get offended every time the wind blows. meaning has been attributed to the flag that it never should have been given... and as a society, we have allowed it because IMO, the younger generations have not been taught history accurately.

i'd like to take southern history back. because THIS kind of political correctness, this kind of hatred of a flag, is no different than the racism that people mistakenly claim it represents. it fosters anger and hatred towards the south and those in it.

i do not agree with what the frat kids said and did. they deserved the consequences they've been given. but frankly i'm so tired of how hatred directed at anyone who is white, conservative, christian or southern (and it gets worse if you're white, conservative, christian AND southern) is pandered to.

so instead of southerners having to suck it up so they don't offend someone, why can't we instead teach the TRUTH about southern history and the meaning of the flag so that those who are offended can come to recognize that there's nothing to be offended about? and so that the minority of southerners who do use it abusively and divisively  can wake up and realize that they're displaying their own ignorance as well as their own bigotry. wouldn't that be a better solution?

by the way, i know it's just a pipe dream. history as it really happened is going to be completely forgotten and the misconceptions are going to become more and more a "reality". hatred of the confederate flag is never going to go away. and there's not a darn thing i can do about it.

except occasionally vent my frustrations over the idiocy of it all.

I'm not going to become involved in this debate but I did want to say that SC no longer flies the confederate flag over the capital building. It is however still flown daily on the statehouse grounds.

never mind, looked it up. since it still flies on the grounds it didn't register that it had actually been moved.
