Problem of Genesis 1&2

It does not say "became", it says "was".  The Earth was unformed and unfilled (tohu bohu), as originally created.  Over the six days of the creation week, the Earth was formed and filled.

The KJV translates Strong's H1961 in the following manner: was, come to pass, came, has been, were happened, become, pertained.
It makes no sense for God to create something  in the beginning void and chaotic.I should add that God is not the author of chaos disorder and confusion..  1 Corinthians 14:33

Creation was over the course of six days.  During that period, the Earth was given its proper form and it was filled.  You make a foundation first, then you form the house on it and fill the house with what it needs.  It was not all done on day one, although God could have done it that way, of course.

The phrase "spirit of God was hovering over the waters" looks to be a reference to primordial chaos - ocean, seas, water were common ANE symbols of chaos.

The word "created" in Genesis 1:1 is from the Hebrew  "bara"-of something new.
The word "made" in Genesis 1:7 and so on, is Hebrew "asa" - to fashion, make from an already existing thing.
Adam and Eve were told to "replenish"mala" the earth- to accomplish,complete.

All this would suggest that God made the earth perfect,as He always does,and something caused His creation to be distroyed into chaos and darkness.

(Isaiah 45:18)  For thus says the LORD, who created the heavens (he is God!), who formed the earth and made it (he established it; he did not create it empty, he formed it to be inhabited!): “I am the LORD, and there is no other.  [ESV]

It is obvious that the chaos of Genesis 1:1 indicates a judgement upon the planet Earth and the Heavens prior to the creation of mankind.  God did not make anything waste and void.  You David1701 are limiting God to using existing unformed materials and water which the Spirit of God hovered over.  nagzie harb makes some good points you are glossing over.  Scriptures taken as a whole instead of nitpicking confirm and explain this understanding.
