one way to deter gossip, to put a stop to it, is if some one is getting ready to share some with you, tell them before they share this with you, that you will be verifying it with the person they are speaking about, and that you will be using their name, and if they say ok, well, turn and walk away..... most people do not want their name tagged to the gossip they are spreading.

Can I hug you? LOL. :)

The rule I use is - when someone comes to me and says "I have to tell you something, but I can't say who told me".......I stop them in their tracks and say "then it's not valid, I don't want to hear it." I've been out of junior high for many years, don't want to go back, lol. If someone isn't willing to stand behind their words, then they aren't credible. And it shouldn't have gotten as far as me anyway, lol. I learned that simple tactic from a Pastor.

There is a church member who almost always says something that shouldn't be said when I talk to her. It embarrasses me and I just try not to say anything. She talks a lot so I don't think she notices. I hate to avoid her completely. She is older and a little lonely I think. I don't want to upset her by pointing out that what she is saying is inapproprate.

If the person who is spreading gossip is called out in front of everyone he/she is talking bad about, I wonder what they would say then? I think when someone is spreading gossip around, they should be called out onto the carpet and explain their actions. Probably be less gossip spread then.

Gossip is a natural thing that most if not all people do. Innocent gossip to me is when you spread news about someone that isn't being mean or rude. Like saying " So and so did this, can you believe that?" To me if gossip has no reason, it is bad and just being in spite of.

When someone begins to gossip, ask some or all of the following questions :

1. '' Who did you hear this from?''

2. ''How do you know this is true?''

3. ''Is this information helpful in any way?''

4. '' May I quote you on this?''

5. ''Is this is supposed to be confidential; if so, why are you telling me?''

I wish I could give credit to the person who first said this, but I dont know who it

is.

Instead of the "What would Jesus do?" question, since I don't feel smart enough in some instances to know what Jesus would do. I try to ask myself, would I be doing this if Jesus was physically sitting right here beside me.

I know we are supposed to know that Jesus is with us always, but, I at least forget that very important point sometimes.

So I catch myself and go would I say that or sit here with this happening if I had to turn around and look into Jesus eyes while I was doing it.

I of course can't speak for anyone else, but it definitely wakes me up and sets me straight.

We're all guilty of gossiping sometime in our life. The sad thing about gossip, is, many times a lot of it is untruths about others. When listened to.... it can plant bitter seeds in a person's mind and leaves doubt within their soul (Wondering if its true or not).

My pastor says when someone comes to you with something to say (gossip), before they speak it to you, ask them if what they have to say is edifying? If not, tell them you do not want to hear it.... less it would cause youself to be bitter.

We're people so we talk about people, but when is it gossip?  Someone summed it up this way "anytime you talk about someone in a way that makes someone think less of that person it's gossip".  I know this is not a perfect definition of gossip but it's a pretty good guidelinel.  What do you think?  Since I've heard this quote I've heard a lot of stuff that sounded like gossip.  I said something too that I shouldn't have by that guideline!

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Ask yourself:

1. Is it true?

2. Is it kind?

3. Is it necessary?
