Discover Your Calling

Find God's purpose for your life and align your choices with it

By: Whitney Hopler, Live It Channel editor

A new year - 2002 [ed: yes this is old ] - brings with it lots of new possibilities for how you can spend your time and energy. The dawn of a new year is a natural time to consider your calling in life, and how you can best align your choices with it.

Sometimes, though, you may not clearly understand God's purpose for your life. And even if you do, God is constantly revealing more about it as you grow as a person. So take some time to discover more about your calling.

Here are some ways to discover your calling:

Know that God has a purpose for your life and has given you unique attributes so you can use them to accomplish that purpose. Think about the ways God has wired you - your talents, your interests, your desires - and write down a list of them. Consider the ways you've been able to bless other people in the past. Then thank God for how He has created you and ask Him to reveal more about how He would like you to contribute to His kingdom.

Confess any sin that's blocking your intimacy with God, and open every aspect of your life to God's guidance. Consider whether anything in your life - a relationship, a job, or anything else - is distracting you from focusing on God. If so, make God the top priority in your life by spending more time with Him than you do pursuing anything else. Invite God to work in your life no matter how He would like to do so.

Pray and read the Bible regularly, listening closely for how God might choose to speak to you during that time.

Ask some people who you know have strong relationships with God how they think you could serve Him well, then pray about their feedback. God will sometimes use advice from people who are close to Him to affirm your calling.

Don't worry about pleasing other people. Instead, strive just to please God. His opinion is the only one that ultimately matters.

Don't compare yourself to other people or feel that you have to compete with them. Realize that God has given you a calling that's just important as anyone else's, and that a calling doesn't have to seem glamorous to be significantly influential.

Be patient. Know that God often chooses to reveal a person's calling through a dynamic process rather than through a dramatic, one-time event. Think about what He's revealed to you so far, act on it, then ask Him for guidance for your next steps. Remember that He's always shaping you as a person.

Look for ways that your dreams intersect with opportunities. Be alert for chances to act on the calling God has revealed to you so far.

Try out new ideas on a small scale, then evaluate the results. Be flexible and willing to explore.

Strive to obey God when He leads you to do anything, even if it seems small to you. If you obey a small instruction, God will probably give you another. He leads you in everyday life, not just when you're facing major decisions such as who to marry or what new job to pursue.

I don't agree w/ this statement .The final commandment given by the Lord is Love your brother. We are also called to lay down our lives for one another.

90% of this message does not line up w/ the New Testament.

Sorry

Hmm. I'm not sure I see the connection. We don't have to please people to love them. Does God always please us? Absolutely not. In His great love for His children many times he actually disciplines us to make us grow. Nothing pleasing about that but I praise Him for it anyway.

90% of the part you disagree with, or 90% of the whole thing? I think most of it does indeed line up. He talks of prayer, reading the Bible, confessing sin, obedience to God, patience and different but equal gifts, all of which are 100% Biblical. Yes he does have some opinion in there which can always be argued, but that's hardly makes this 90% unbiblical.

This is true but as we accept the truth it must be all truth w/ no half truths.

A natural time? Calling? purpose? The world operates in the natural as opposed to the spirit.

Scripture please.

I've found that people can be very critical of revalations around here, Qun Mang.

I agree with some of what you're saying and disagree with some.

followerofjesus

If you are right 100% of the time then you are a prophet

According to your logic if you have a revalation that is not 100% accurate you must be new age.

I hope you double check the things you discuss with others. :24:

It's getting to be I'm afraid to say anything anymore without somebody accusing me of being a hereitic and I'm not even catholic

Whatever; I won't compromise the truth , & I will show your error, as I hope you would for me. Its called rebuke which Jesus did his whole life.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Daniel: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 3

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
