Some good has come from this development to be sure...but anything that can be used for good can also be used for evil. Not only does the internet provide instant audiences for people who are "not right"...it also provides a means to indoctrinate, negatively influence, and stir up hatred...all without leaving home. Dangerous ideology and horrible lies can be spread in a matter of minutes. Guns, just like knives, bombs, cars, or trucks don't jump up and kill people. Its the person behind the gun. AND, Of course it's never pointed out that they are proposing NZ adopt something like the NSW firearms registry. .. which was and is still not close to being properly funded, and has never worked properly. The registry never stopped a bloke getting a license and killing his family despite two guns clubs he tried to join refused him membership because they thought he was nuts. Gun control is an ongoing problem as you rightly delineate, Hazard. Public response to the shootings here is being driven by Media Saturation, with waves of sympathy for all those bereaved, aggrieved, and struggling to comprehend engulfing and streaming into every nook and cranny of our collective awareness. Our Government is rising to the crisis with a promise of swift changes to the gun laws first and foremost on their agenda but there is also an incipient groundswell of praise and admiration for our hijab-wearing Prime Minister who has been spoken of as a "religious symbol", perhaps one could say she is "Mother Jacinda", but the irony there is that having been raised in a Mormon family she has in the past subscribed to atheism and Marxist socialism.
