Lyrics

  1. 1. Onward, Christian soldiers!

    Marching as to war,

    With the cross of Jesus

    Going on before.

    Christ, the royal Master,

    Leads against the foe;

    Forward into battle,

    See his banners go!

  2. [Chorus]

    Onward, Christian soldiers!

    Marching as to war,

    With the cross of Jesus

    Going on before.

  3. 2. At the sign of triumph

    Satan’s host doth flee;

    On, then, Christian soldiers,

    On to victory.

    Hell’s foundations quiver

    At the shout of praise;

    Brothers, lift your voices,

    Loud your anthems raise.

  4. 3. Like a mighty army

    Moves the Church of God;

    Brothers, we are treading

    Where the Saints have trod.

    We are not divided;

    All one body we:

    One in hope and doctrine,

    One in charity.

  5. 4. Onward, then, ye people;

    Join our happy throng.

    Blend with ours your voices

    In the triumph song:

    Glory, laud, and honor

    Unto Christ, the King.

    This through countless ages

    Men and angels sing.

Text: Sabine Baring-Gould, 1834–1924

Music: Arthur S. Sullivan, 1842–1900

One of my hobbies is family history. Many years ago I discovered a headstone for my third great-grandfather. Part of the inscription is from an old hymn, “Sister Thou Wast Mild and Lovely” and I have done much research about the lyrics and melody. It seems to be listed in modern hymnals even today and it has A beautiful melody. I have only found one audio version that seems to follow the original melody line, and many others that seem to have taken on a more modern approach to the melody. The one that seems most original is sung by children, and their interpretation is basic. (No offense to the children) I’m looking for a rendition from an adult choir . Has anyone in the group heard this beautiful song? Does anyone know of an adult audio version of it?

If you want to know what hymn is special for many United Methodists, google  this video:

"Jack Toney, Guy Penrod --Dwelling in Beulah Land"

I had heard this hymn once as a boy.  Decades later, I was walking down a country road, asking the Lord to give me new ideas for church music and the lyrics of this hymn began to play in my mind!  I introduced it the following Sunday and the effect was electrifying!  As in the video, I had a jazz pianist to energize the song.  It's hard to believe that Austin Miles wrote both this energizing hymn and "In the Garden."  "Beulah" is a Hebrew word for "marriage" and "Dwelling in Beulah Land" means rising above your problems and enjoying a second honeymoon with God.

My favorite is "It Is Well with My Soul."

Agree - a praise born of extreme agony - and given by the Holy Spirit.

One of my most favourite hymns is "Here is Love Vast as the Ocean".  I believe it was  originally written in Welsh, during the Welsh revival.

1 Here is love, vast as the ocean,
loving-kindness as the flood,
when the Prince of Life, our Ransom,
shed for us His precious blood.
Who His love will not remember?
Who can cease to sing His praise?
He can never be forgotten
throughout heav'n's eternal days.

2 On the mount of crucifixion
fountains opened deep and wide;
through the floodgates of God's mercy
flowed a vast and gracious tide.
Grace and love, like mighty rivers,
poured incessant from above,
and heav'n's peace and perfect justice
kissed a guilty world in love.

3 In Thy truth Thou dost direct me
by Thy Spirit through Thy Word;
and Thy grace my need is meeting
as I trust in Thee, my Lord.
Of Thy fullness Thou art pouring
Thy great love and pow'r on me
without measure, full and boundless,
drawing out my heart to Thee.

"Pilgrim's Progress" characterized "Beaulah land" as a place of REST That Christian and Hopeful came to after all his trials on the road to "Celestial City" - seems to be similar in concept to the Wesleyan "Entire Sanctification"  theology.
