You must be able to point them to their self deception. Every cult is built on this mystical manipulation and the one preaching to them must not enable this deception, instead they must confront it. Read the link and all eight parts if you are dealing with someone in a cult, or if you yourself have been involved in one in the past and you will see how cults manipulate.

 https://libertyforcaptives.com/2012/06/29/eight-ways-to-identify-religious-brainwashing-mystical-manipulation-part-2-of-8/

This is a great resource to help if you are intervening in someone's life who is in a cult to explain away their Manipulations.  Even some mainline churches operate this way, and have become a cult of personality. Take the time to read all 8 parts they are short and easy to read.

Same as any witness.  Live Jesus before their eyes.  Then be ready to give an account of the hope that lives in you, when they start asking questions about what you got that they don't have.

Acts 2 drives that home, and two quotes from believers in history come to mind.  One who rather insightfully pointed to the nature of witnessing in a positive way, and one who talked about some of the problems with witnessing.  One was an old Catholic saint, might have been Francis of Assisi but i can't recall for sure...but he quipped:

"Preach the gospel to all creation, if necessary, use words."

Another quote that i think addresses witnessing came from Brennan Manning:

“The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians: who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, walk out the door, and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.”

What does it take?

The Holy Spirit through a believer who is led by Him. It is the work of the Lord.

Reach Out Trust is a great organisation for help, advice and resources for all who have been affected by, or want to help those affected by cults of all sorts.

I have heard good things about them before.

That is what I mean by being filled with the holy spirit.
