WASHINGTON, Oct. 7 - A plan developed by the Bush administration to deal with any possible outbreak of pandemic flu shows that the United States is woefully unprepared for what could become the worst disaster in the nation's history.

A draft of the final plan, which has been years in the making and is expected to be released later this month, says a large outbreak that began in Asia would be likely, because of modern travel patterns, to reach the United States within "a few months or even weeks."

If such an outbreak occurred, hospitals would become overwhelmed, riots would engulf vaccination clinics, and even power and food would be in short supply, according to the plan, which was obtained by The New York Times.

The 381-page plan calls for quarantine and travel restrictions but concedes that such measures "are unlikely to delay introduction of pandemic disease into the U.S. by more than a month or two."

The plan's 10 supplements suggest specific ways that local and state governments should prepare now for an eventual pandemic by, for instance, drafting legal documents that would justify quarantines. Written by health officials, the plan does yet address responses by the military or other governmental departments.

The plan outlines a worst-case scenario in which more than 1.9 million Americans would die and 8.5 million would be hospitalized with costs exceeding $450 billion.

It also calls for a domestic vaccine production capacity of 600 million doses within six months, more than 10 times the present capacity.

It seems that the media, every year at this time, likes to scare the wits out of people with this kind of story. Unfortunately, the people that they scare the most is the elderly. Most of them are in frail health to one degree or the other. If the flu doesn't kill them, scaring them into a heat attack will.

Romania has reported its first cases of bird flu but scientists are unsure if the strain found in the Danube delta is the same as that which has hit part of Asia.

Researchers in the Romanian capital, Bucharest, have found flu antibodies in three domestic ducks that died in a remote village last month.

The exact strain of the flu is yet to be determined.

There are unconfirmed of three more cases of bird flu and a cull of birds is already underway.

Analysts say the Danube delta is particularly vulnerable because it lies along a route taken by migratory birds, which often mix with domestic ducks and geese.

Romanian scientists have been taking samples for months in anticipation of such an outbreak.

At least 60 people have died after contracting H5N1 bird flu across Asia in the last two years.

So, let me see if I got this straight...

If the government tries to prepare people for a possible future disaster, it's a scare tactic. But if the possible future disaster happens and there was no effort to prepare people by giving them information that could help them, then they get ripped apart by the public for not doing their job? Darned if they do and darned if they don't it seems.

I know there is an element of sensationalism with the media, but the possibility of a pandemic is real. Unfortunately there is no posting the information without the sensationalism these days. But this isn't a random story I posted. I've been following this from the very beginning. Check the Latest News archives. I'm not trying to be Chicken Little, running around screaming, "The sky is falling!" I post these articles for two reasons. One: Because I believe the possibility is real. Two: Because if it is real, it's part of the unfolding of the last days.

If you think it's bunk, that's your choice.

Didn't we go through the same thing last year with the flu vaccine "shortage"? Yeah, I remember, Bush didn't produce enough flu vaccine.

Remember the results of the influenza epidemic ca. 1915. Millions died in the U.S. We have come a long way in our treatment of influenza, but only SO MANY people can be treated at one time. It is time to get your colloidal silver generators.

Heck, I might start selling them! But remember, Congress--whose management of the ECONOMY brought us approximately 20 TRILLION dollars in debt--now feels THEY are best qualified to decide on your health care options too! And despite THOUSANDS of medically documented good stuff about colloidal silver, Congress has decreed that it can only be sold as a treatment for plants and pets!

Odd how Congress gets tens of millions of dollars every year from the pharmeceutical companies, and--just coincidentally, mind you--ignores ALL real data about colloidal silver (which can't be patented by the pharmaceutical companies), and makes it illegal to sell for human use!

Again, I am SURE of Congresses' wisdom, and SURE this is solely coincidental!

I agree with Keith. Just read the world news and see all that is going on everywhere. I believe the Lord has given America many warnings and time to prepare, so if we are not prepared when it happens, and something is bound to happen, whether it is an epidemic or a natural disaster unlike anything we have ever seen before or we are bombed with nukes - we must take these threats seriously, not to panic, but to be prepared. The best preparation we can do is to be in a right relationship with Jesus Christ, to be walking daily in fellowship with him, to be listening to his voice to hear what he has to say about all of this, and then to be walking in absolute obedience to whatever he shows us. If we are doing that, we have no reason to fear. We should all be watching the signs of the nearness of the Lord's return and we should be asking God what our response should be. He wants to send a revival, of that I am sure, and that is my hope.

BTW - my grandmother died in the flu epidemic of 1918, which they say this bird flu is of the same type. I never knew her. She died when my father was 4 yrs old. My other grandmother died when I was 2. She had cancer. So, I never knew either of my grandmothers.
