"I have 4 piercings on my ears, two on each, I’m not brave enough to have the cartridge pierced"

The numbing cream we were talking about for tattoos (see link mentioned earlier) is also sometimes used for ear piercings so if extra ones are going to be put in it's really easy.

@Sower As a 'first love' expression (to use your term in this context) it's not unusual for those who have been recently converted to think that it can be an effective way of expressing what they now hold dear.

The rest of the story,

Again, you only addressed not my point, but only your desire to arouse sympathy of your audience that what a new believer, influenced by his current environment, getting tats is some kind of vision from God to show his excitement of (hopefully) becoming a child of God. I can understand that, though they can be emotionally misguided. Tats are becoming more popular in the world, of the world.

Also again, you omitted my point that during an emotional experience, and getting saved sure is emotional, people are impulsive, emotionally, and without guidance as a new believer and will not be considering just what the word of God, his commands to us, says about cuts and tattoos they may be considering. (They are watching us here now, our testimony).  Going with the popular trend, and not the word of God? There is no argument here. Believers are not called by God to cut or disfigure by tats to show belief, but by the INWARD change of the heart.

"Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead,
nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD"
Leviticus 19:28

Seems to me fairly cut and dried, but then I'm just old.

But that's old testament, not for today, out of context, right.

The Truth About Tattoos & Piercings

What Does The Bible Say About Tattoos & Piercings?

"On the subject of influence, let us consider also that many times Chapter 1 5 the places a person has to go to get a tattoo will be harmful to his/her influence. Going into a bar is wrong even if one doesn’t drink. Going into a strip club is wrong even if one doesn’t look. Going into a casino is wrong even if one doesn’t gamble. Why? Because those practices are very destructive to one’s influence. What about tattoo parlors? Generally speaking, they have very seedy reputations. Sometimes their names alone speak volumes:

  • Sinful Inflictions
  • Dark Images
  • Red devil Tattoo and Piercing

It is disturbing how many tattoo and piercing parlors have the word sinful in their names.

In our current society, tattoos send a particular message. For years, they have been associated with a counter-culture. Tattoos (and unusual body piercings) send a message of a certain type of person, and they are associated with a certain type of people. A former policeman reflects on the time of his career when more and more officers began acquiring tattoos.

The department issued a new policy: officers could get tattoos only if they were hidden by their uniforms. The reason? Because of the message tattoos send. Numerous news stories on the internet discuss the problem of tattoos and body piercings in the workplace. One article from Fox News points out that some employers are having to write very specific dress codes to address the problem. Many employers are requiring that their staff dress in such a way as to hide their tattoos. The new tattoo Barbie doll was mentioned earlier. Here is an excerpt from an article discussing this new doll. “Parents have already rallied up against Mattel, asking for the dolls to be pulled off the market.” One parent asked, “Whatever will they bring out next? Drug addict Barbie? Alcoholic Barbie?” Why are parents rallying against Mattel? Because in our society tattoos have negative connotations.

"In the Bible in 1 Timothy 2:9-10. It says, “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; but which becometh women professing godliness with good works"

The fourth thing to take from this passage is the phrase in verse 10: “which becometh women professing godliness.” In other words, “in a manner that says to the world, I am a servant of God. My most important concern is to be godly.” Let’s pull all of this together and see what we have. Christians are to adorn (decorate) themselves in a way that does not draw undue attention to themselves. They should have a sense of shame and modesty about them. They ought to exercise good judgment; they are to dress and adorn themselves so as to communicate godliness. Do tattoos communicate godliness?

"Over time tattoos stretch, fade, and began to look very bad. Then, too, there is the regret factor. For various reasons, many people who get tattoos look back years later, or maybe even soon afterward, and regret their body marking that will be there the rest of their life. What is cool to a teenager does not have the same vibe to a 40-year-old. Stewardship of our bodies is only one issue to consider"

"Remember there are many very ungodly people who have tattoos. Having a tattoo of a cross is not necessarily going to set you apart. In fact, having a tattoo is going to make you more like them. What does it say about you as a Christian when you have a tattoo? Here’s a third question: “What if I already have tattoos?” For someone who already has a tattoo, our discussion might make them feel very self-conscious. We are not trying to embarrass anyone. We want people to examine Christian principles and then make decisions that are the most in line with the Bible. If you have excessive body piercings, you can change that. If you have a ring in your nose, you can take it out. But if you already have a tattoo, there is not much you can do about it short of spending a great deal of money to have it removed. One Christian put it this way: “When I became a Christian, baptism washed away my sins but it didn’t wash away my tattoo.” That is true, but it doesn’t mean someone with a tattoo cannot be called a faithful Christian"

"Tattoos and excessive body piercings can hurt and perhaps even destroy a person’s influence. They can violate principles of modesty. They can pose grave risks to one’s health, and they may result in poor stewardship. But if you already have them, it is not too late. They cannot stop you from serving the Lord and being a faithful Christian. Each of us should have the attitude of the apostle Paul: “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me” (Galatians 2:20). Why? Because Jesus said, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me.” We are to live for the Lord, and as 1 Timothy 5:14 says, we don’t want to give any occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully"

Previous research on tattooed and pierced individuals has linked them to having lower self-esteem and a higher need for uniqueness. Trauma survivors may turn to body modification as a way to overcome past experiences.

Are people who have tattoos psychologically damaged?

A study of a community sample of women (Reference Romans, Martin and MorrisRomans 1998) found that being tattooed was associated with more psychiatric symptoms, borderline personality characteristics as well as increased alcohol use. Childhood sexual abuse was reported more often in women with tattoos.Jan 2, 2018

You've been pushing so hard, farouk, to sell everybody tats are good to show everybody you are a 'Christian,' I feel it necessary/responsible to give the other side, what scripture say about our walk and testimony, of the world but not in the world,  to all the viewers and seekers watching/listening to you on this thread.

I didn't think much about tattoos and have my experience over the years with those do have them. I cannot erase my experiences, nor what opinions I have formed. We all have history. With your persistence in pushing  tats for Jesus, you have caused me to research this subject to see the downside you have not shown. There is a lot more downside, especially medically, but I have already posted too much.

You have your opinion, cool,  and I have mine expressed here now,
and each of us will give account. Hope we both have shed some light.

@Sower Thanks for your comments. I don't think I'm saying, "Ppl without a tattoo, go get a tattoo!" If this is the impression, it's not quite what is intended. More likely, It's a fact that so many believers - especially young believers - feel motivated to get faith based designs in the expectation that they will lead to conversations with others. All the young ppl with Bible verses tattooed with whom I have spoken seem to have received theirs for this purpose.

Kind of horrifying and depressing to me that the finer points of how to be tattooed and pierced is being discussed on a Christian forum.  Doesn't seem appropriate at all.

Unbelievable statement for me based upon all your pro tat posts.

"feel motivated from where? God? Scripture? Based upon feelings?

Why not farouk give the people here a complete non biased understanding of all getting skin tattoos is about? Both sides, good, and bad. Complete truth.

Why not look up, google, the medical, psychological, spiritual, biblical outcome from getting tattoos embedded into the flesh. The dark side of the practice, that the youth thinks it's ok because everybody is doing it. And encouraged to.

Be fair to the viewers and seekers. Options to consider, and not just feelings.

What comes to mind is Samuel 16:7 “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

I should have reread the 1st post for I would not have posted what I did. Yeah I would be against as sis said getting bible tattoos so you can witness. Granted God will use those that have had all that kind of stuff done then get saved and use it as a witness to others but to do it to witness is not a good idea.

Sorry Heleadethme :) love ya. This might help if you or anyone reads what I post. My son haha oh I can't tell you how many times I heard "did you even read it?" HAHA he was spot on every time pfft. So is ok to tease and say "did you read it?" lol

As for "spent more time diligently searching the Word of God as a compelling pursuit" being maybe an addiction? No since He said we are to keep His word before our eyes day and night and to be praying about everything 24/7. So we will see His will on earth as it is in heaven

I always walk softly here and watch what I say. I still remember the very young girl with all these beautiful tattoos and I complement her on them. She then looked sad saying its best to think before you get them. She never looked ahead and how she would feel just a few years later. We can add burdens to those that have them or make them feel condemned. I pause and think wait and listen to the sweet spirit of God and do not believe they are wrong. Just really need to think before. Most can't get them off.. so I choose to say words of life.

No I just kinda touched this so..

@TheBlade

I'm guessing that the young lady whose tattoos you complimented did not have faith based ones. If they had been faith based (Bible verse like those of all the young ppl with Bible verses tattooed that I have talked with), do you think she would have regretted them as much?

(Or maybe this is too much of a chicken versus egg type of question.... )

@TheBlade Re. "She never looked ahead and how she would feel just a few years later."

I'm sure this is indeed the case with some ppl.

In the cases of others, it may be that such is the conviction that the joy of a Scripture tattoo - such as that of the Godly and modest young lady that my wife and I talked with - will maybe never leave her. (If this also makes some sense?)

If someone wishes to be tattooed, that's their own affair. :noidea:

I got that, and agree Marathoner. Until someone starts pushing how great a witness for Jesus it is having a tat and not represent the repercussions of injecting ink, permanently,  into the body God has given us, not realizing how an average  lost person associates tattoos with the counter culture, not Christ. There are many aspects of having tattoos not being made known, and that is deception.

Many churches/preachers today have also found what attracts people, and so much of it is not biblical. But it is popular feel good preaching, and there is money in it. And so many, being unaware and fooled not knowing the truth, like the lemmings follow the herd caught up in the latest fad going to the feel good church, and other fads they do not consider the ultimate end. Ignorant. Are we as Christians supposed to be light, or stay under the basket, at a Christian forum where many seekers are watching/listening to us.
