I take it with a large grain of salt, but a recent story is that he was complaining that his Twitter presence was dwindling despite his large following. He does seem to enjoy trolling on Twitter. He already has a very large platform in the world. I'm not sure what form of leadership he may aspire to, but his successes in Space-X and Tesla certainly give him an element of leadership in specific areas of technology at the global scale.
