I used to try to play Rachmaninoff when I was still taking piano lessons but could never come close to his speed, clarity and accuracy. Does anyone remember the hymn " Leaning on the everlasting Arms" Lyrics- 1 What a fellowship, what a joy divine, Leaning on the Everlasting Arms! What a blessedness, what a peace is mine, Leaning on the Everlasting Arms! Leaning, leaning, Safe and secure from all alarms; Leaning, leaning, Leaning on the Everlasting Arms. 2 O how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way, Leaning on the Everlasting Arms! O how bright the path grows from day to day, Leaning on the Everlasting Arms! 3 What have I to dread, what have I to fear, Leaning on the Everlasting Arms! I have peace complete with my Lord so near, Leaning on the Everlasting Arms! I love those comforting lyrics. I guess noone gets in any hurry when they lean on someone. Music is a very contentious element of modern churches. There are some (though as time passes, more and more of them are "going home") that really think the old hymns are really all we should do. There are many of them I really love, but I also think some of the new stuff is just as good and many times better. But there is a "background noise" for many of us that the old stuff is the best. After all, how do you beat Amazing Grace or It is Well? But what people don't realize is that there are thousands of those old songs in hymnals all over the country. And most of them, IMO, are terrible. But what we focus on is the 20 or so that are great and really timeless, leading to the false impression that all the old stuff is the best. It isn't. I am a big rock guy and always liked Creed for having what I refer to as "righteous rock". Rock is a very masculine form of music which is why it appeals to me, but that doesn't have to mean it is all about rage, drugs, and sex as is the stereotype. Depends on the spirit and lyrics of the song largely imo. It's really only the more extreme ends of the specrtrum like metal and heavier stuff with screaming demonic bents that I'd say are incompatible with a believer.
