Reminders – The Law Part 2

            Last week we looked at what the law was designed to do and what it couldn’t do. Now we will see why the law was given and its relationship to the followers of Jesus.

THE LAW WAS A SHADOW: THE REALITY IS JESUS

Matthew 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.

Luke 24:44 “And he said unto them; These are the words which I spoke unto you while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the Psalms, concerning me.

Hebrews 9:19 “For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people.”

Hebrews 10:1 “For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually, make the comers thereunto perfect.”

Hebrews 10:4 “For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.”

John 1:29 Pointing to Jesus, John the baptizer said, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”

BELIEVER’S RELATIONSHIP TO THE LAW

Romans 7:6 “But now we are delivered from the law, being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.”

2 Corinthians 3:6 for the letter kills, but the spirit gives life.”

Galatians 5:18 “But if you be led of the Spirit, you are not under the law.”

Galatians 3:21-21 “Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid. For if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. But the scripture has concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.”

Galatians 3:24 “Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.”

Romans 7:10-12 “And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me. Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

Romans 7:23 “But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.”

BELIEVER’S VICTORY OF LIFE IN THE SPIRIT

Romans 8:1-4, 14 “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”

Final Thoughts: Speaking about the law’s relationship to those who are born again, Paul emphatically admonished us to, Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.” Galatians 5:1    ph

The Law of God was not destroyed.  Jesus warned that we are not to even think or allow it to enter your thoughts, that he came to abolish the Law and the Prophets of God but that he came to fulfil the prophecies spoken about him.  The word fulfil does not mean abolish it means: to do, to execute, to bring about.  There are still prophecies about Jesus that have not been fulfilled according to the Law and Prophets regarding his second return, the resurrection, and his reign during the millennial kingdom and New Heaven and Earth, so all has not been fulfilled.  Jesus said the Law will stand as long as Heaven and Earth still stands, yet heaven and earth still stand.  In fact, Jesus said those who do and teach others to keep even the least of the Commandments will be considered great in the Kingdom of God, but those who break the commandments and teach others to break even the least of the commandments, that person will be called the least.   My questions is, what commandment do you consider to be the least of God's Commandments and teach others its okay to break?

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach [them], the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed [the righteousness] of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. - Mat 5:17-20

This is when Israel will come out from under the law and be join with the New Covenant. One has to realize Jesus knew some of Israel would accept him and some would not accept him. He fulfilled it for two purposes one to keep the rejectors under and to be able to set old law aside and establish a new covenant new law with Him being the new Priest.

Ezk 36 discloses God placing them under the new covenant

24 For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land.

25 Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.

26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

Jere 30: 7

7 Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble; but he shall be saved out of it.

Eph 2:15

15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

for all practical purposes it is abolished for those who accept Jesus as Savior.

Rom 3: 31

31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

Rom 10: 4

4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

Heb 7: 11-12

11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?

12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.

Are you free from the law of Christ? 

We are all exhorted (indeed commanded) to fulfill the law of Christ.  

By God's grace we're made free from the bondage that the law placed on us, but we're not made free to live as we please, e.g., satisfying the lusts of the eyes, the lusts of the flesh, and the pride of life.  By God's grace we're made free to live as we ought to live, in a manner consistent with the way God wants us to live.  Thus, fulfilling the law of Christ.

The whole quote taken from the title is this: For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.

The law of Christ is the law of the Spirit of life.

Only believers can do that.

Amen. The law of Christ is to and for born again believers.  And we are to fulfill the law of Christ, which means that we will do as Christ commanded: love God with all our heart mind and strength and love others as Christ loves us.  We do so not only in spirit and in truth, through prayer and petition, but  also doing what we can physically in aiding and alleviating our brethrens temporal burdens. Amen.

How can our righteousness exceed that of the Pharisees?

Only by receiving the imputed righteousness of Christ by faith when we are born again. Not by keeping any portion of the law. Jesus fulfilled all the law for righteousness. I cannot fulfill the law except by receiving it. Rom 10:4  For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.     Jer 23:6  In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Because we are born again we are righteous. Not because of what we do or don't do. We receive righteousness by faith. And because we are righteous, we do righteous (or good) works because God is doing the work in us.

1Jn 3:7  Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

Paul did a wonderful job in Romans 5 explaining this. We are not sinners because we sin but because we are in Adam. Likewise, we are not righteous because we do righteous (or good) works, but because we are in Christ. We are condemned in Adam. We are justified by faith and are in Christ.

The Scribes and Pharisees thought it was okay to divorce their wives for any reason and remarry.  Jesus explained those who divorce their spouses expect on grounds of fornication (sex outside of marriage) are committing adultery. 

The Scribes and Pharisees thought it was okay to hate your enemies.  Jesus said if you want to be complete like our Heavenly Father we must love our enemies as he also loves those who hate him.

Jesus explained several other examples of how we are to live righteous and pure lives and not live like the hypocrites who only have a outward appearance of righteousness but are full of sin and impurity on the inside like Scribes and Pharisees.  They praise God with their mouth but their heart is far from him.  Our rightful living must exceed that of the Scribes and Pharisees or you will in no case enter the Kingdom of God.

We aren't accepted by what we do but by what we believe. Because we believe we are able to be a vessel unto honor as He does His work in us.

Mat 5:48  Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

The only way I can be perfect is to have Christ's righteousness, not by what I do. I fail miserably and fall short of God's perfection. BUT, Mat 10:41  He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.

I have Christ's reward.

This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

      You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

      Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

      I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

      For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

      2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. 

      So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

      Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end. 
      Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house. 

      Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

      As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

      Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
      Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

      So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
