Vision of the Plumb Line

Amo 7:7 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall [made] by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.

Amo 7:8 And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more....

What is this plumbline? For some reason this image really stuck with me after reading Amos last week. I picture this plumbline as being the Law. God's Law being so absolutely straight and level that if anyone tries to measure up next to it they will see how utterly crooked they are. Putting this plumbline in the midst of the people gives them a standard to measure themselves against, and to show them why He must judge them in the following verse.

I believe that this plumbline correlates to the measuring line mentioned in Jeremiah 31:38-39, Isaiah 28:17, and Zechariah 2:1-2, which all precede judgement.

What was significant about Elijah's ministry? If one will be sent in the same spirit before the Day of the Lord?

1 Kings 18:17 Then it happened, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, "Is that you, O troubler of Israel?" And he answered, "I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father's house have, in that you have forsaken the commandments of the Lord and have followed the Baals.

1 Kings 18:21 And Elijah came to all the people, and said, "How long will you falter between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him." But the people answered him not a word.

Is it what he will be saying regarding the Commandments and idolatry?
