Since April 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin has been notably absent from public view, sparking speculation as to his whereabouts. However, today may mark his return as he's rumored to meet with Donald Trumps envoy Steve Witkoff in St Petersburg.

If no ceasefire is reached by the end of the month, Trump could move forward with additional sanctions on Russia either through executive power or by asking Congress to pass new sanctions legislation, a source familiar with the issue told Axios.

Ukraine’s key allies are meeting in Brussels on Friday with a noticeable absence at the table: US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who is only attending virtually. The Ukraine Defense Contact Group, which was created by former US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin during the Biden administration, is a group of roughly 50 nations that meet regularly to discuss bolstering military support for Ukraine. It will mark the first time a US defense secretary has not attended the meeting in person since the group was established in 2022

The meeting of the Ramstein-format coalition in Brussels comes amid growing uncertainty over U.S. support for Ukraine and efforts by European allies to close the gap as Kyiv resists Russia's ongoing invasion.

The U.K., France, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and another unnamed country stand ready to send their soldiers, while other leaders want to see a more detailed plan before making commitments, AFP reported.

More than 100 Chinese nationals fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine are acting as mercenaries and do not appear to have direct ties to Beijing, according to two U.S. officials cited by Reuters. However, a former intelligence official told Reuters that Chinese military officers were present behind Russian lines, with Beijing’s approval, to observe and draw tactical lessons from the war.

Iran talks with USA will take place in Rome on 19 April 2025 concerning Iran’s nuclear status.

Hamas in negotiations to end conflict refuses to disarm and or release all hostages.  Talks continuing.

In a 60 Minutes interview, Zelensky issued key warnings: the war may spread beyond Ukraine, the US must not stay neutral, and Patriot missile systems are urgently needed.

Zelensky has submitted a Ukrainian Bill to extend Martial Law for 90 days. Martial Law is currently set to expire on 9 May.

Peace talks with Russia being mediated by USA are on going but no end in hostilities seen in the near future.

Europe is trying to unite in anticipation of providing a peace force, or if things escalate, a deterrence force.   Germany, France, UK, Belgium, Netherlands, Sweden, etc all increasing military training and spending.

Israel and Hamas still trying to negotiate a cease fire.  Hamas says will not disarm or wave white flag.  Israel wants Hamas to release all hostages, disarm and depart Gaza.

Ukraine's parliament has extended martial law until 6 August, lawmakers said, delaying the timing of new elections that the United States and Russia have been pushing for.

Russia's upper house of parliament, the Federation Council, ratified a strategic partnership treaty with Iran on Wednesday, Russia's TASS state news agency reported.

Roughly 5,000 North Korean soldiers have already been killed or injured, but 6,000 remain in Russia's Kursk Oblast and are likely to be used in new assaults, Ukrainian intelligence said.

Russia has been intensifying its use of chemical agents on the battlefield in Ukraine, with Kyiv recording over 6,000 cases of use of munitions containing hazardous chemicals between February 2023 and 2025.
A capsule with CS gas, a riot control agent, has been found in one of the Russian drones, the center said, adding it had verified the information with Ukraine's security services and the State Emergency Service.

Talks between USA and Iran on going but at stalemate.  Iran says next talks in Oman, but Rome has also been said to be the next place for talks this coming Saturday.  No one seems clear on where talks will take place.   USA wants to limit Iran's storage and enrichment capabilities, Iran has not agreed to any limits.

After weeks of frustration over Moscow’s missile attacks and reluctance to accept an unconditional ceasefire, Rubio said that the Russo-Ukrainian War is a “terrible thing, but it’s not our war.”

Rubio went on to add that US President Donald Trump was ready to walk away from efforts to broker the peace deal “within days” unless there are clear signs that a deal can be done.

Ukraine imposed sanctions on three Chinese companies on Friday, a day after President Volodymyr Zelenskiy alleged that China had been supplying weapons to Russia.

Chinese researchers have successfully detonated a new hydrogen-based explosive device, signalling a leap in the country's military capabilities. This breakthrough, described as a non-nuclear hydrogen bomb, was developed by the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), with the device tested in a field experiment.
