My Sunday School / Bible Study Teacher told me that God is a Spirit. She said that it is in the Bible, I said "where?" She said that it was the verse that said:

John 4:23

Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks." But I thought that this meant that this is WE ought to do????

In any case, I disagreed because I've always thought of God as something that no words could describe. I still don't really understand what she meant by that. Can someone help to shed some light on this subject? TIA

to answer your question: "God is a Spirit; and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and truth". John 4:24 When you are confused about something and a passage is quoted to you, read the rest of the verses in context. That will help you understand better.

The correct translation of the verse should be "God is Spirit," not "God is a Spirit."

There is a big difference between saying "God is Spirit" and God is a Spirit." Spirit denotes God's essential nature - what He is. When you say, "God is a Spirit, what you are implying is that God is one of more than one Spirit. See what I'm getting at?

Some have erroneously translated John 1:1 the same way. Instead of it saying, "..The word was God," they translated it to say, "...the word was a God. Well, Jesus, who is the Word of God, is not a God; He is the God.

Also, saying that God is Spirit does not mean that God does not have physical form; Spirit denotes only His essential nature - what He is.

Genesis 1

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

God created the universe. This indicates to me that God is everything.

Careful. That is not really right, but leans toward pantheism.

God has no beginning and no ending. The universe had a temporal beginning just a few thousand years ago, and it will have a temporal ending just over a thousand years from now.

Isaiah 65:17

For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.

Revelation 21:1

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

God created me, but I am a seperate being from God, and no part of my "self" is a part of God. God inhabits me, because I have repented of my sin and believed on the name of Jesus Christ and what he did at the cross, but he is not me and I am not him.

God created animals, but there's no evidence in scripture that the Lord even lives inside animals as he does man, and God isn't my cat and my cat isn't God.

God created the Universe, but the Universe is not God and God is not the Universe. He inhabits the Universe in a temporal sense, but he exists outside the universe, and before and after the universe as well.

Genesis 1:1

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

"created" is defined as "cause to exist" in this context. "heaven and the earth" is literally refering to the entire universe. So we see God existed "before" the temporal universe we live in, and the universe is not God, and it isn't "part of" God.

John 17:24

Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.

Revelation 13:8 (Whole Chapter)

And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Yeah God is Spirit. For we are to worship Him in Spirit and worship Him in truth! We cannot worship the Spirit of God carnally (fleshly with fleshly things).

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • George Whitten, the visionary behind Worthy Ministries and Worthy News, explores the timing of the Simchat Torah War in Israel. Is this a water-breaking moment? Does the timing of the conflict on October 7 with Hamas signify something more significant on the horizon?

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Daniel: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 3

      Shalom everyone,

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
