Split topic: knowledge thread

I didn't want to hi-jack a thread so I will split this off and ask here

I have decided I would like to study the other languages that were mentioned in that thread, Hebrew-Greek. Now heres the hard part...I don't know where to begin. I live in a small, small town so there is no resources here.

Is there any good books I can purchase online for this purpose?

Will I be able to teach myself? Basics.

Are there tapes available so I can actually hear the language?

I'm thinking about including this in my kids home school studies....so we all can learn together. It was time to choose a language anyway...so why not this?!

Ok people, feel free to post resources or links to the material I may need. And feel free to give advice on the best way to start. I'm open to all suggestions.

I don't recommend you trying to teach yourself these languages, especially if you plan on teaching them to others. Is there a Bible College or Seminary in your area (even out of town a few miles)? I'm afraid I'm not familiar with US Bible Colleges, otherwise I'd probably be able to at least direct you to an online course...but if you can find one, that would probably be your best bet. Ancient Hebrew and Greek are very involved languages, especially if you're learning them at an older age (children have a much easier time picking up languages, because their brains have not fully grown into a specific language yet).

I would never presume to think that I could become fluent in these languages....just a basic knowledge.

No there is no colleges or anything near me...the closest is probably over 50 miles away where there would be a chance of a course offered.

*grin* I always forget that 50 miles is a long way in the US...that's only about 80Km, and my boyfriend's sister drives about 130Km (that's about 80 miles) to work (and then that much again to come home in the evening) five days a week. Hmmm...gives me an idea for a Sociology project...

Anyway, try searching online for some Christian colleges/universities/seminiaries you know of...as I said, you might try getting an online/distance ed course.

That is a daunting task you wish to take upon yourself, especially since you stay busy with home schooling. That is to be commended. I have a problem with learning languages. Some people find it easy, but certainly not me. Yet I am an advocate of going back to the original languages of the Bible. I use a Concordance, a Bible Encyclopedia and several commentaries, as well as several different versions of the Bible. Don't feel you HAVE to learn Greek and Hebrew, but to be able to work your way around the Bible, a good concordance helps a lot.

There are numerous sites on the web you might look at for learning Hebrew and Greek, if that is what your heart is set on. Just punch in something like "hebrew (or greek) language lessons" or something like that in Google.com and you should come up with thousands of hits.

If you don't have a good computer Bible, get a hold of E-Sword - FREE on the web that has all sorts of commentaries and concordances and dictionaries etc. This, I think, would help you more, at least in the short term, than trying to learn Greek or Hebrew with your current heavy schedule. If you can learn them, go for it, but it is not necessary.
