A fret is "a small bar of metal across the fingerboard of a guitar; when the string is stopped by a finger at the metal bar it will produce a note of the desired pitch." It's also a word synonymous to worry. The joke is a pun - "A play on words, sometimes on different senses of the same word and sometimes on the similar sense or sound of different words." Go stick your nose in the corner for insulting this bluegrass guitarist! Awe - c'mon, Ron - it was funny! I presented it as I heard it; not knowing it was a joke gives the punchline an added kick.
