Opinion: Don't Believe the Hype

According to Al Gore's new film "An Inconvenient Truth," we're in for "a planetary emergency": melting ice sheets, huge increases in sea levels, more and stronger hurricanes, and invasions of tropical disease, among other cataclysms--unless we change the way we live now.

Finally someone decides to step up to the plate and tell Al Gore he's wrong!

This movie reminds of the "documentary" Ted Dansen made about 15 years ago, where he said the oceans will be dead within ten years. Does anybody know BIG the earth really is? It's not as "unstable" or "delicate" as we have been led to believe.

Well I don't think we should dismiss all Global Warming theories as "political" or "Al Gore's propoganda." Science is science...we look at ice cores, ice depletion, rising average tempetures, etc and it is easy to come to the conclusion that the earth is warming up. What many Op Ed pieces miss is that hte controversy is over what causes Global Warming (Global Warming meant to refer to a general warming of the earth), not over if it is really occuring. WE look back in history and find the earth goes through warm periods and cold periods...we are most likely in a warm period.

At the same time, Al Gore is an absolute nut. I heard him say that even a nuclear war would not compare to global warming...and I sat there thinking about how absurd that comment was. LIkewise, he refers to millions being displaced and creating thousands of refugees. THe problem is, yes, if the seas right, if the worst case scenario occurs, it will take 200 years before the seas rise to the maximum level...if people can't figure out to leave the coast in 200 years then they have problems and quite frankly deserve to be refugees.

The hype he creates is false...but it doesn't mean Global Warming is likewise false. Personally I don't think pollution has helped any, and we should take care of the enviroment. At the same time, I don't think we are capable of destroying the earth.

One big volcano can change the enviroment for a few months, a year, or many years on a global scale. Look to 1816 where the northern united states didn't have a summer...in June there were two snow storms and in July and August ice was observed in New England rivers. What cause of this? An eruption that occured way back on April 15, 1815. In other words, well over a year after the event the climate was still suffering the effects. Thankfully, we don't polute to that ammount in one day (otherwise we would freeze), but it does show that certain chemicals released into the air, even if natural, can affect the global climate.

Oh, and don't forget Europe, which had snow year round, even in Italy, due to this event.

Exactly. As with most issues, the truth is in between. People on both sides of a debate often spin the facts to make their point. Well spoken brother.
