Parents Jailed, Fined in Germany for Homeschooling

CWNews.com --HEIDELBERG, Germany - What if you had to choose between not home schooling and being arrested?

In a western democracy that is tolerant of just about anything, except teaching your children at home, German parents who want to home school have to decide.

In a little town near Heidelberg, four German home school families have either already served jail time or were about to be arrested. The families are actually German Baptists from Russia. Because of their German blood, they were allowed to return to Germany to become citizens when the Cold war ended.

They probably never imagined that the persecution they faced in the old Soviet Union would follow them here. These German Baptists have been forced to give up home schooling for now, and have placed their children in a private Christian school.

But other home schoolers have taken their children and fled Germany altogether. Some have even had their children taken away from them.

While polling shows about half of Germans now support the right to home school, the German government will have none of it.

Although attitudes toward home schooling are changing here, home schoolers are still thought of as weird, and home schooling as damaging to children. That's an interesting claim, considering what German public school children are exposed to in the classroom.

Sad thing is, that country is not the U.S. People have been jailed for homeschooling here to, more often though, their children are just taken from them. On case many many years ago, a father was shot by the authorities, because of his refusal to have his kid go and get indoctrinated with evolution. That wasn't the reason he was shot, but it was the reason that led up to his getting shot. He was on his farm, teaching his kids at home. He went to get his mail from the mail box, and put a rifle down that he was carrying, the authorities came rushing in on snowmobiles, and when he went toward his rifle, they shot him. There is no need for this kind of thing to happen, but sadly, it does.

It is no good just shifting to another country. That is just running away from the problem and making it all the harder for those who cannot just "up and shift".

All these weird occurances and the German law has to be challenged and a precedent set. If 50% of the public in Germany is for home-schooling than it shouldn't be too difficult. I'm sure the public is sick of political correctness too, this is driven only by a handful of bureaucrats and a handful of people in parliament who "have an axe to grind" (and if it is anything like it is here, probably don't have children of their own anyway).

If these things are happening all over, they have to be confronted. Or the attitude behind it will easily be exported and you will find that you're constantly running from country to country looking for one where you can live your beliefs.

Made me think about all those who have gone before us to secure our liberty and right to certain freedoms..

and all the states have different rules for homeschooling..

Some are pretty tough...that is if they are the same they were 15 years ago...

been a while for me...

It's a real good idea if you are homeschooling to make sure you know the law in your state..

someone spearheaded the battle and paid the price for those who followed..

I really don't know anything about German government but if it allows laws to be changed and enough folks want the change and enough folks are willing to lay down their life for it then it will come...

You would think they would better serve the country concentrating on theses kids and making sure they were in some kind of school..

The Waldorf method of educating children is a concept that originates from Germany. I don't know if all the German public schools honor this philosophy of education or not, but I wouldn't be surprised if that is what they mean by the occult is being taught in their public schools. I remember when we first started out homeschooling, I actually looked into Waldorf philosophy thinking they had some good ideas. But then I found out that philosophy of education includes teaching our children things that are contrary to God.

The #1 thing we look for when purchasing curriculum for homeschool is to make sure it is a good strong Christian curriculum. Especially in areas like science! We LOVE learning about science from a creationist perspective. We realize that we are very fortunate to live where there are very few homeschool regulations.

For those of you not familiar with homeschooling and would like to but are afraid of this sort of thing happening to them, there is a fantastic organization called Home School Legal Defense Association. No, but here is another article about homeschooling in Germany. We are very fortunate to have the freedom to direct the upbringing of our children. HSLDA is doing all they can to help the homeschoolers in Germany.

The German Government forced the children of these parents to attend public school. Why? The German Government declared that it could not tolerate children in Germany being educated in any other way than secular humanism and moral relativism.

The German Christian home schooling parents appealed to the European Courts and the ruling of the German Government was upheld by the European Union Courts. German Christians were failed to see when the European Union Constitution was implemented they lost their religious liberties. No court of appeals is available to theses Christians in Germany. In the same manner, once the North American Union and North American Union Constitution are implemented through a series of apparently innocuous trade treaties like NAFTA, GATT, WTO, Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America and the North American Union, it can only be expected that such events will follow.
