Resurrection versus resuscitation

Recommended Posts

In a study guide I was reading, it maintained that when Jesus raised people from the dead, he resuscitated them rather than resurrected them because "resurrection" is being given a new life as opposed to "resuscitated" which is having the old life restored. (Ok, i'm fine on that point). Also, that we are assured that Jesus was resurrected since, after He rose, many of His believers did not recognize him at first--though He had His old body, it was changed in some way (i.e., still had nailprints but not immediately recognizable). (Ok, i'm ok here, too).

Following this thread, the guide states that the modern Christian church has allowed its theology to follow Hellinistic threads in that it preaches the immortality of the human soul--that is, when we die, our soul does not. But that this is incorrect since Jewish Pharisidic philosophy stated that the soul as well as the body dies and God must resurrect both to new creations.

I've searched the scriptures re: immortal. Paul does state that the mortal must put on immortality. And in one of his letters to timothy, he says that only God is immortal.

I had just never considered that the soul dies at death as well and must be resurrected as well as the body. Any scriptural thoughts would be MOST welcomed as i have to teach on this subject this next Sunday.

John 11:25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;

Not "I am the resuscitation and the life, though he were mostly dead, yet shall he wake up." Those that were resurrected were dead, it even makes a point to say that Lazarus smelled. People who need resuscitation don't usually smell like they were dead for 4 days. I do not think that anyone who was resurrected by Jesus Christ felt like they had their old life back! I am certain they felt changed in some way!! Wouldn't you?

resurrection - anastasis {an-as'-tas-is}

1) a rising up, rising

2) a rising from the dead

a)that of Christ

b)that of all men at the end of this present age

c) the resurrection of certain ones in history who were restored to life (Heb. 11:35)

resurrection - egersis {eg'-er-sis}

1) a rousing, excitation

2) a rising up

3) resurrection from the dead

This second usage is only found in Matthew 27:53

I was just reading in Psalms 115, verse 17, where it says that the dead do not praise the Lord, those who go down to silence. To me, this doesn't sound like there is a spirit that goes to heaven and is praising God. There are several threads here on mortal vs immortal soul.

My personal opinion on resurrection vs resusitation is that He will resurrect, because it would be hard to resusitate a body that has been decayed for thousands of years.

Ditch your Study Guide with purposeful abandon and listen to the Lord Jesus Christ Himself in John 20:26-29, especially Verse 29! And 1 Corinthians 15:12-20 ain't all that bad either! Thank You, Lord Jesus, for Your substitutionary death on Calvary and for Your literal resurrection from the dead! We love You with all our hearts! AMEN & AMEN!

Kat, don't forget the next verse, Psalm 115:18 "But we will bless the LORD from this time forth and for evermore. Praise the LORD". We will praise him forever, because we will be forever with him. Our dead bodies will not do anything till they are resurrected. 2 Corinthians 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.

:21: Dead bodies in the ground cannot praise, but the living spirits of those dead bodies who know Jesus, are busy praising! Hallelujah, we praise and adore you, Jesus!

LAW: I would throw out that study guide you are using pretty darned quick.

My Jesus certainly has the power to call a spirit of a dead person back into his body! He certainly has the power also to cause that body to regenerate to life! Why the word change?

It is to reflect unbelief! I will have none of that. Either Jesus is Lord of all or He isn't! I happen to believe He is Lord of ALL!

Thanks for the comments, but i don't feel my primary question was answered:

when we die, does our soul die as well so that it must be resurrected when our bodies are resurrected or does it continue to live?

Our spirits are eternal..those of us who know Jesus go to God.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

      Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

      This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

      You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

      Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

      I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

      For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

      2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

      So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

      Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
      Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

      Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

      As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

      Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
      Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

      So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
