Is Hell ETERNAL?

Thought I'd pose this question. Do you believe that the ones who do not accept Christ as their Savior and go to hell when they die, will be eternally tormented, or that it comes to an end at some point and they are "released"?

I definitely believe it's eternal:

Mark 9

44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

4570 // sbennumi // sbennumi // sben'-noo-mee //

a prolonged form of an apparently primary verb; TDNT - 7:165,1009; v

AV - quench 7, go out 1; 8

1) to extinguish, quench

1a) of fire or things on fire

1a1) to be quenched, to go out

1b) metaph. to quench, to suppress, stifle

1b1) of divine influence

----------------------------------

Matt.25

[41] Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

166 // aiwniov // aionios // ahee-o'-nee-os //

from 165 ; TDNT - 1:208,31; adj

AV - eternal 42, everlasting 25, the world began + 5550 2,

since the world began + 5550 1, for ever 1; 71

1) without beginning and end, that which always has been and

always will be

2) without beginning

3) without end, never to cease, everlasting

Greetings Calamity,

It depends upon WHICH "hell" you are speaking of. The word we read in our English Bibles, HELL, has been translated from one of several words, some meaning the "grave" or "deepest" parts of the earth or perhaps "the Lake of Fire". You may want to think on:

Revelation 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

The word "hell" here is "hades" = the abode of the dead.

The "Lake of Fire" is eternal.

Blessings,

Dad Ernie

Hi, DE. Do other versions use hades instead of hell in this Mark passage?

Mark 9

[43] And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

[44] Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

This is from the KJV. I didn't check the NIV or others for how they're worded. Maybe the thread title should be Is the Lake of Fire Eternal?

Calamity now that I am back on the Internet DE has already answered with the scripture I was going to put down.

In one way hell is eternal because as DE pointed out in scripture that death and hell were swallowed up in the Lake of fire. So, we can say hell is eternal being in the Lake of Fire if that makes sense. Gary said exactly what DE said too. He was talking about the grave, the deepest parts of the earth and the Lake of Fire.

Are you trying to get to the point that no one will ever get out of the Lake of Fire and be able to be reunited with Jesus? If so, I certainly agree with you. How do you feel about that?

Yes, Dove - that was the point. Once they're there, it's eternal. Never to leave. Not there to be punished or refined with fire, then released to be with God, like some teachings are saying.

The ones who are thrown in the lake of fire will be there for eternity. They will never get out. Eternity is forever and that is a very long time. It is so long that we can not fathom how long it is. Yes, I have read teachings like that about people being purged and reunited with Jesus. This is a false teaching don't you think? I believe it is heretical teachings.

Yes, I think that is not biblical at all. I'm not totally sure how they even come to that way of reading that into it in the first place.

They came by it by listening to the wrong teachers and have been deceived. One deceived it will take an act of God to get them out of these false teachings. Do you think prayer is the answer here?

Yes, and sound doctrine. I've read some wild things on the internet, that some people are teaching, and they are way off mark. Do you know of anything else similar to this here, about being released from the fire after being cleansed?

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Daniel: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 3

      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this study, I'll be focusing on Daniel and his picture of the resurrection and its connection with Yeshua (Jesus).

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
