Datan,

Right now two of my favourite Psalms are 61 and 62. I am not going to post them as it will give you the chance to look them up yourself.

Pam

Pam,

Oh, I can't wait to read them. I just have to buy a Bible first ...

There are several versions of the Bible, right? ._.

I feel so stupid. I know so little.

If I'm right (being there are many versions), which one would I get?

Thanks again =D.

Hi Datan,

Welcome to Worthy! I am also a Catholic. :24:

It sounds like your friend is growing in her relationship with Christ. She is letting go of things that she believes come between her and Jesus. That is totally compatible with the Catholic faith. :emot-highfive:

The definition of sin from the Catechism is:

1849 Sin is an offense against reason, truth, and right conscience; it is failure in genuine love for God and neighbor caused by a perverse attachment to certain goods. It wounds the nature of man and injures human solidarity. It has been defined as "an utterance, a deed, or a desire contrary to the eternal law."

******************************

As Catholics, we believe there are mortal sins and venial sins. (Many of our brothers and sisters in Christ do not make this distinction.) Your friend is letting of of those things that may not seem "sinful" to you, but may prevent her from growing in holiness. Even those things which seem "harmless" may put a barrier between us and God.

***********************************

CCC1863 Venial sin weakens charity; it manifests a disordered affection for created goods; it impedes the soul's progress in the exercise of the virtues and the practice of the moral good; it merits temporal punishment. Deliberate and unrepented venial sin disposes us little by little to commit mortal sin. However venial sin does not break the covenant with God. With God's grace it is humanly reparable. "Venial sin does not deprive the sinner of sanctifying grace, friendship with God, charity, and consequently eternal happiness."

While he is in the flesh, man cannot help but have at least some light sins. But do not despise these sins which we call "light": if you take them for light when you weigh them, tremble when you count them. A number of light objects makes a great mass; a number of drops fills a river; a number of grains makes a heap. What then is our hope? Above all, confession. St. Augustine

Here's a few suggestions:

1. Like you said, get yourself a Bible and start reading it. If you are not sure which one, go to a Catholic shop and ask about the differences in the versions. Basically, some are more true to the original languages, which makes comprehension a little more difficult. Other take a little liberty with translation, but may be easier for a beginner.

2. Pick up a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church; or you can find it on line.

3. Pray--sounds like you already do. :emot-highfive:

4. Talk to a priest about your questions.

5. Read "Life of Christ" by Fulton Sheen. No special reason; just an awesome book! :)

Peace,

Fiosh

Hi, Fiosh,

nice to meet you :].

Oh, you're right on target with that =D. Lisa is devoting herself fully and utterly to Jesus, whom she already loved more than a lot of us xD.

So convictions are a part of the Catholic faith, as well? That's good. I'm sure God will guide me to mine, too.

You know, as soon as I read Catechism, my brain gave a little leap. We studied this in 2nd grade. I just forgot about it, I guess.

I think I forgot mostly about venial sins. And I believe Saint Augustine hit the nail on the head when he said that. It's so weird, though. I knew this stuff when I was eight or nine, but here I am at nine-teen years old, relearning everything -- learning new things. Trying to figure out whom I want to be, and whom I want Jesus to be in my life.

I never thought that would happen to me. Never, ever.

Joe [points up] gave me tons of links, so I can read right here on my macbook =D. Which is awesome because my mom and dad won't that I'm trying to achieve. I want to be able to say that I made this decision because it was something I was well informed of, and wanted to do. (while Im writing this to you, and listening the Kingdom Hearts Original Soundtrack on iTunes, I am also reading the first pages of Luke. It's quite good, actually. Fun to read aloud.)

Catechism, okay, I can do that. Check.

My prayers are like the rain; they space between distances of time. I should pray more, really. And from now on, I will.

... I don't go to church that often anymore. I know I should, but my mom works every-other weekend, and on her weekends off, we usually just don't think about it. I'm usually sleeping because I'm tired all the time .-..

That is not an excuse, though. I want to go. And I owe it to God to give up a little sleep.

Anyway, I'm not sure how to talk to a priest about how I feel.

Ohhh. I'll go to Barnes and Nobles or something next week to check out that book =D.

I never heard of the author, actually. But I do love reading, so I'll be excited to have something new in my hands.

Thanks so much, Fiosh, you rock :].

Actually, someone was kind enough to send me a link so I can study the bible right from my laptop. And I'm very excited about it. I'm going to look up your favorites as soon as I finish this page on Luke's gospel.

Peace <3

Datan, I'm not Catholic, but Fiosh is a dear, dear friend of mine. She's taught me so much, opened up my eyes to so many things, about the Bible, God & Jesus. She loves the Lord with her whole heart and shares Him with everybody she meets! Good luck with all your reading and may God bless you!

Hello.

Now, before I even start to type why I'm here, I'm making it clear that I am Catholic and I do not intend to change that. However, my friend is Protestant, and basically I want to know why some things are worse in her religion than in mine.

You see, she's recently returned from a youth camp in her area, and she just posted a blog about how she's changing for the better. She says she has decided that she was doing some inexcusable things by laughing at jokes that were crude, and wasn't being bothered by her friends using foul language and such. She's even going to the extent of burning certain music of hers (literally, she's burning CDs), and deleting music off of her iPod and stuff.

I've always been the 'sick kid,' if you will. Always the scraggly one left behind because I was too ill to do things with my friends. I believe in God. I trust in God. I truly and purely love God. And although my life has been difficult from the get-go, I still know that He has some plan for me. But that's not the point, I grew up Catholic. And I'm fine with our traditions and whatnot, and I do understand that there are some customs that vary from religion to religion. For example, after doing some research on my own, I found that in the Christian faith, the Word is more central than, say, the Eucharist in Catholicism, for the Alter is centered in the Catholic church, and the podium in the Christian. Now, aside from that, I become puzzled.

If all religions lead to God, then why are the traditions so very different? Why is it okay for me to like music that my friend can't? I believe the music she's referring to is along the lines of Nirvana and stuff like that. But it's only music. Music is a form of expression, right? And although this may sound blasphemous, how is a form of self expression (that makes so many people happy, mind you) a sin? How is that harmful to me, and how is it hurting God?

I should probably be asking my friend this, but I'm afraid that I would offend her. Point blank, I'm afraid I'm going to lose my friend because of our differences.

I mean, I'm not a bad kid, per se. I don't drink. I don't smoke. I'm staying abstinent until marriage. I curse only to myself. I even managed to maintain a B average in college while being sick the whole year.

I'm scared that my wit might offend her.

Any opinions? Suggestions? Anything?

Thanks.

~Datan.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
