Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John. 14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth. 16 Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous--to make ready a people prepared for the Lord." "John" in Hebrew is Yochanan, which means "God is gracious." Knowing the harsh - repent or perish - kind of message Scripture records him preaching, it is interesting that the Lord commanded Zechariah to name his son "God is gracious." Yet, it pleased the Lord for "God is gracious" to prepare the way for "God is salvation" (Hebrew: Yeshua, English: Jesus). Interesting, huh? Knowing the harsh - repent or perish - kind of message Scripture records him preaching, it is interesting that the Lord commanded Zechariah to name his son "God is gracious." Yet, it pleased the Lord for "God is gracious" to prepare the way for "God is salvation" (Hebrew: Yeshua, English: Jesus). Interesting, huh? What is grace if it has no meaning or value? What makes grace of such great importance? Just what have we been spared from? Why does a believer love the Lord? Proverbs 3:34 NKJV Surely He scorns the scornful, But gives grace to the humble. Luke 3:7-14 NIV John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. The axe is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. "What should we do then?" the crowd asked. John answered, "The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same." Tax collectors also came to be baptized. "Teacher," they asked, "what should we do?" "Don't collect any more than you are required to," he told them. Then some soldiers asked him, "And what should we do?"He replied, "Don't extort money and don't accuse people falsely - be content with your pay." Matthew 21:32 HCSB For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you didn't believe him. Tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him, but you, when you saw it, didn't even change your minds then and believe him. Hebrews 10:29 ESV How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has spurned the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? Psalm 111:9-10 NASB He has sent redemption to His people; He has ordained His covenant forever; Holy and awesome is His name. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments; His praise endures forever.
