The Cypriot-born, Australian-based artist has shown off his new ear, which fits neatly on the inside of his left forearm, at the opening of a design exhibition at Newcastle upon Tyne in England. He says he plans to have a tiny microphone connected to a transmitter implanted near his new ear so his audiences can listen to what it "hears". "I think art should be more than simply illustrating ideas," Arcadiou told The Mirror. The new ear was grown from cells in a science lab and implanted in Arcadiou's arm last year. Arcadiou, who is also known as Stelarc, originally wanted a third ear grown on his head but doctors deemed it too dangerous. Instead, he spent a decade searching for a surgeon to help him implant the ear in his arm. Arcadiou spoke about his new ear as he unveiled his latest project, a six-legged "walking head" robot which will be on display as part of the Dott 07 Festival at the Newcastle Centre for Life this month.
