The US National Academy of Sciences issued a spirited defence of evolution as the bedrock principle of modern biology, arguing that it, not creationism, must be taught in public school science classes.

The academy, which operates under a mandate from Congress to advise the government on science and technology matters, issued the report at a time when the theory of evolution, first offered in the 19th century, faces renewed attack by some religious conservatives.

Creationism, based on the explanation offered in the Bible, and the related idea of "intelligent design" are not science and, as such, should not be taught in public school science classrooms, according to the report.

"We seem to have continuing challenges to the teaching of evolution in schools. That's something that doesn't seem to go away," Barbara Schaal, an evolutionary biologist at Washington University in St. Louis and vice-president of National Academy of Sciences, said in a telephone interview.

"We need a citizenry that's trained in real science."

Evolution is a theory explaining change in living organisms over the eons due to genetic mutations. For example, it holds that humans evolved from earlier forms of apes.

The report stated that the idea of evolution can be fully compatible with religious faith. "Science and religion are different ways of understanding the world. Needlessly placing them in opposition reduces the potential of each to contribute to a better future," said the report.

But teaching creationist ideas in science classes confuses students about what constitutes science and what does not, according to the report's authors.

The report was released by the academy and the Institute of Medicine, which advises policymakers on medical issues. It updates academy publications issued in 1984 and 1999. It was written by a committee headed by University of California-Irvine biology professor Francisco Ayala.

"Biological evolution is one of the most important ideas of modern science. Evolution is supported by abundant evidence from many different fields of scientific investigation. It underlies the modern biological sciences, including the biomedical sciences, and has applications in many other scientific and engineering disciplines," the report stated.

The authors highlighted developments in evolutionary biology, citing its importance in understanding emerging infectious diseases. They noted the discovery, published in 2006, of the remains of a Tiktaalik, a creature described as an evolutionary link between fish and the first vertebrate animals that walked out of water on to land 375 million years ago.

Advocates of "intelligent design" contend that some biological structures are so complex they could not have appeared merely through natural processes.

A judge in Dover, Pennsylvania ruled in 2005 that the teaching of intelligent design violated the US Constitution, which requires a separation of church and state, because it is based on religious conviction, not science.

A 2006 Gallup poll showed that almost half of Americans believe that humans did not evolve but were created by God in their present form within the last 10,000 years.

What else would you expect from this moron. Perhaps we should also allow astrology, alchemy etc to be taught in science classes.

You make a very good point. The sad things is that Darwins theory is just that, a theory. Their teaching it in school as fact only indicates the governments willingness to program rather than educate.

You make a very good point. The sad things is that Darwins theory is just that, a theory. Their teaching it in school as fact only indicates the governments willingness to program rather than educate.

For all intents and purposes, a scientific theory is not just an idea, its a fact until proven otherwise by empirical evidence and observation. Evolution is so universally accepted in science that it is one of the two fundamental laws of biology.

Wouldn't teaching children that they were indeed Created by a Loving God and in His image give them an advantage when faced with lifes trials. Wouldn't it give them an understanding of self worth far beyond any that anyone could ever steal away from them? Wouldn't then a weight of Gods Glory be felt in the whole of the community and therefore see us as a Nation rise above the filth and slouching towards Gommorah that we are currently engaged in? Wouldn't knowledge that we are Created in the image of God then give us a Hope and teach us the Wisdom of valuing Life?

You can certainly teach your kids that they were created by a loving God, and still teach them that evolution is a law of biology. I am not sure why some people see that as contradictory.

For all intents and purposes, a scientific theory is not just an idea, its a fact until proven otherwise by empirical evidence and observation. Evolution is so universally accepted in science that it is one of the two fundamental laws of biology.

You can certainly teach your kids that they were created by a loving God, and still teach them that evolution is a law of biology. I am not sure why some people see that as contradictory.

It is contradictory because evolution is predicated on impersonal process.

The creation account teaches that God created the universe and that we are not here by chance nor are we the process of impersonal evolutionary process.

They are contradictory because according to evolution man exists millions of years after other species died off. The Bible teaches that all death came through Adam and that before man was created, sickness, disease and death were not in the world until Adam sinned. You cannot teach or hold to evolution without violating basic theology laid out in the New Testament.

      I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

      For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

      2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. 

      So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

      Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end. 
      Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house. 

      Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

      As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

      Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
      Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

      So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
