This is not surprising. He's a liberal Democrat. This is taste of what we will get with Clinton or Obama and a Dem congress. BEWARE!!

Michigan Congressman Wants 50-Cent Tax Hike on Every Gallon of Gas

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

A Michigan congressman wants to put a 50-cent tax on every gallon of gasoline to try to cut back on Americans' consumption.

Polls show that a majority of Americans support policies that would reduce greenhouse gases. But when it comes to paying for it, it's a different story.

Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., wants to help cut consumption with a gas tax but some don't agree with the idea, according to a new poll by the National Center for Public Policy Research.

The poll, scheduled to be released on Thursday, shows 48 percent don't support paying even a penny more, 28 percent would pay up to 50 cents more, 10 percent would pay more than 50 cents and 8 percent would pay more than a dollar.

"I don't want to pay more, I don't think anyone wants to," said Karen Deacon, a motorist.

"I think that wouldn't make any sense," said Frankie Hoe, a motorist. "Ugh ... who's making the money from all this and where is that money going? Is it going to go green? I don't see any green things anywhere."

The automobile is the nation's biggest polluter; Americans use more gas than the next 20 countries combined.

Some environmentalists and economists say pain at the pump may be bad for Americans, but good medicine for a sick planet.

But others say it wouldn't change much. Even if Americans abandoned their cars, global emissions would fall by less than one percent.

"A tax on gas is a way to reduce dependence on import oil, reduce traffic congrestion and reduce carbon emissions," said Lester Brown, president of the Earth Policy Institute.

The Earth Policy Institute proposes raising the gas tax 30 cents per gallon each year over a decade and offset with a reduction of income taxes, Brown said.

David Ridenour, vice president of the National Center for Public Policy Research, said the proposal wouldn't help long term.

"I think when you are talking about raising gas prices, there may be short-term reduction, put off vacations, but bottom line is over long term, that isn't going to have much of an effect," Ridenour said.

While Dingell's idea will likely lie dormant until after the 2008 election, the idea of carbon taxes is not. Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John McCain all support some type of system that either directly or indirectly will raise prices to penalize polluters.

Yepp, thats michigan dems for ya!

Increased income tax, largest increase ever in Michigan.

Implements a SBT (single business tax) (which in turn caused business owner personal property tax to more than double)

Property taxes are now based on inflation NOT what your home is worth. (still haven't been able to wrap my mind around this one)

Want to raise sales tax.

Hiked up the so called "sin tax" on cigs....not alchohol...go figure that one out....

Roads are terrible here....none are getting fixed because they say they can't afford it...and we are gonna have to pay more...

over 395,000 moved out of Michigan

over 400,000 jobs lost

over 90,000 homes in foreclosure.....and going up

Unemployment benefits are usually always denied....the poor person has to go through a process that takes up to 6-8 months...by then, most times its too late

I could go on...but I would depress myself..... :emot-hug:

anyone know off hand what the current national gas tax is? it would also be interesting to find out how much state gas tax is tacked on, but that's a lot of states.

if the government really wants to help lower and middle class citizens, they need to cut the gas tax. it seems like i recall hearing that something like 1/3 of the price of gas is actually lining the government's pockets.

I don't understand why diesel is higher than premium, when it used to be lower than regular. How do you truckers do it, Butero?

Independent truckers are being put out of business. I am a company driver, and they pass the costs along to the consumers.

The reason why Diesel is so high is because environmentalists were able to get a law passed that reduced the amount of sulpher. This idiotic law couldn't have come at a worse time, because it has driven the price of diesel up to over $4 per gallon in some places. It is not like we had some kind of environmental crisis taking place. We have been using the same type of diesel fuel for years, but just when we are already dealing with increased prices, they slap us with something to raise them further. This will not only effect truckers, but it will effect the price you pay on everything you buy.

Let me guess. Liberal environmental wack-os?

In most states the price of gas already contains as much as 30% in taxes!

What makes this nutjob think that increasing taxes will cut consumption? People need to fuel their cars to get to work!

The odd thing is our economy's problems began when gas prices went up.

The housing market began suffering on account of this. I heard this from a real estate agent I met at a church picnic not long after the beginning of the housing crisis began. After sharing the troubles she and others were having, I asked what might be causing this, and she replied that the only factor any of them could figure it would be was the rise in gas prices.

Everything wrong with our economy has snowballed since then.

So why are they making gas prices even higher? Are they trying to kill the economy?

I know here in MI, alot are losing their homes due to the property tax also....heres how MI works:

You buy a home....looking at the property taxes on the sellers disclosure you see the State Equalized Value is 89,000 and the Taxable Value is 44,000....

You have your property taxes put into escrow (included in your house payment)

The year after buying your home...MI uncaps your property taxes because your a "new" owner and no longer benefit from a tax cap...so now based on what the SEV and TV was the year you bought it...here is what your new tax bill looks like...SEV 89,000 TV 89,000...poor people, their taxes more than doubled, which in turn upped their house payment by 200-400 per month...

On top of the gas prices what is a person to do?

and yet they want to repeal bush's tax cut, they object to the tax rebate, and they point their grubby little fingers at bush for the economy.

butero.... mark once told me that the whole thing with diesel fuel costing more than gasoline is absurd, because it costs far less to produce diesel. funny how it's so much higher. what's wrong with this picture? EVERYTHING.

this country could not survive without the trucking industry. we are totally dependant on truckers. it's a shame that ya'll don't get the credit or respect you deserve.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
