'Mere Christianity' makes sense, scientist tells CS Lewis Foundation

Posted: Saturday, August 2, 2008, 10:24 (BST)

An award-winning American scientist noted for his landmark discoveries of disease genes, and leadership of the Human Genome Project to map the entire human DNA, has described his journey from atheism to Christian belief to an international audience in England.

"There really is no conflict between faith and reason," Professor Francis Collins told the CS Lewis Foundation's international summer institute, Oxbridge 2008, on at St Aldate's Church, Cambridge, on Wednesday.

"As a committed materialist in college, I assumed the physical was all there was," said Collins, who in 1977 at the age of 27 completed a career change from chemistry to medicine and became a doctor. This, he said, forced him to confront pain and death face-to-face. "That was a dramatic turn for me. The concepts were not hypothetical anymore."

Have you read his book "The Language of God"? very good read, but I would say that much of what he believes would not be accepted by most Christians.

He puts forth what is basically Theistic Evolution

.

I don't know about most Christians...

Unless you're talking about in the USA (as opposed to England, for instance), but then I'd suspect that the attitudes of Christians towards various different methods of creation would vary even then, including between regions such as northern and southern USA.

Why can't the Creation account in Genesis be literal? It says in the Bible that 1 day in the courts of the Lord is like a 1000 days.....BUT we are talking about God and that means OUTSIDE of existant time....in the Genesis account, we are talking time as "IN" the world...sunrise, sunset...

The evidence is that there was no such mega Flood. Thats why.

That's interesting because many diverse cultures have stories in their oral or written history of a great flood. A similar vein.

I would have to disagree. I have been associated with Christians from all parts of this country, as well as Japan and South Korea and I don’t think too many of them would go along with all of what is put forth in the book. The Language of God.

While I personally haven't read the book, I can't find much in the Amazon reviews to provide support for that statement.

Doesn't seem to be much there that would turn off a lot of British Christians, for instance...

Apart from that, I agree with you regarding Genesis and 24-hour days...

You obviously have absolute authority to make that particular statement because with a statement like that - it leaves no room for error.

So you are 100% convinced in your own mind of a non global flood at any point in history. Is the evidence you claim, substantiated within the scientific community at large- both secular and Christian? If not, then the evidence is not watertight. It would be lopsided.

The authority I stand by is God's Word which is revealed to us through the Holy Bible. You either believe His Word through Faith or you write it off as untruth...if you do the latter, this does not qualify you to make a broad statement that the Bible is NOT true. The evidence of Truth in people lives through the Bible/God's Word is that lives have been changed in drastic ways.

Genesis 1 v5

God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.

NKJ study notes : The evening and the morning: The Hebrews began each new day at sunset. This time designation, along with the numbering of the days and the Sabbath rest on day seven, shows that the author views creation as happening in the course of six consecutive 24-hour periods, followed by a seventh of divine rest.

Blind faith?

You believe the World is turning on it's axis don't you without seeing this happen with your own eyes? Is that blind faith?

Like you I believe in the Bible, but I believe literally. Am I wrong to believe that?

No I haven't studied the original writings of Scripture or interpretations of old Hebrew text...but should that make me question the writings I do have available to me in His Word at this present time?

If I start decoding the Bible and making it blend into what I desire IT to sound like..then I may as well keep what I want out of it and reject the rest...be a free agent and believe in a Bible "according to myself". That is dangerous territory and something I won't adhere to.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • George Whitten, the visionary behind Worthy Ministries and Worthy News, explores the timing of the Simchat Torah War in Israel. Is this a water-breaking moment? Does the timing of the conflict on October 7 with Hamas signify something more significant on the horizon?

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
