Heb 11:1 - Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

~~~~~~~~
I've been puzzling over presenting this article.
On the one hand, "the placebo affect" is an accepted phenomenon. On the other hand, the author of the article centers her presentation around Voodoo to illustrate the power the mind has over the body. Yet, as I read the article, I could see that this is how faith works.
Now I don't mean "faith" the noun (a religion or a belief), I mean "faith" the verb.
Faith the verb?
Yes, faith as the Christian understands the word is a verb!
(Which is one of the reasons we keep going around in circles with our debates on the subject.)
But in any event, I hope no one is offended by the (true) story illustration presented at the beginning of the article, bu that you are able to see the message behind the words. My intent behind posting this is for us to discuss the kind of belief that changes things - "the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen."
Very interesting article Nebula, I have added Nocebo to my vocabulary.
It could substantiate something of the theme of Carnegies book, 'The power of Positive Thinking'....or even endorse some of the aspects of what has become known as the 'Faith Movement', or an old addage amongst Christians that proclaimed, 'what you say is what you get.'...all from a purely 'scientific' basis...ie a practical hypothesis with observable phenomena with evidential results.
The thing is, does 'faith' boil down to a scientifically observable residue, that can ultimately jumbled together with voodoo or any other 'faith-based' religious palliatives, and serve to give the scientific community a handle of those of us who have this added 'sense/dimension' to our lives?
It is particularly poignant that you should quote Hebrews:-
Heb 11:1 - Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
This verse incorporates what might satisfy a scientific demand...ie . for 'substance' and 'evidence' and the chapter goes on to give example after example of people who have utilised 'faith/trust' with a huge variety of results, from observable personal preservation as in the case of Rehab, or the children of Israel, to a hope in eternity that remains unseen in the physical like Abraham or king David etc....but the results of which are evidenced by the way they live their lives and proclaim G-ds goodness.
It is a verse that links up with:-
6. And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
THat is very interesting. Many things operate on the spiritual level that a lot of science has trouble with.
Interesting. I believe that this is like the power used in mass hypnosis where multiple people believe they have also witness creative power from the dark side . . . which it cannot do. Yet, even these practitioners of darkness believe as do their victims . . .
2Ti 3:13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse,
deceiving, and being deceived
.
