The meaning of Elijah is: "whose God is Jehovah". Here is what Easton's says about "Tishbite":

Elijah the prophet was thus named (1 Kings 17:1; 21:17, 28, etc.). In 1 Kings 17:1 the word rendered "inhabitants" is in the original the same as that rendered "Tishbite," hence that verse may be read as in the LXX., "Elijah the Tishbite of Tishbi in Gilead." Some interpret this word as meaning "stranger," and read the verse, "Elijah the stranger from among the strangers in Gilead." This designation is probably given to the prophet as denoting that his birthplace was Tishbi, a place in Upper Galilee (mentioned in the apocryphal book of Tobit), from which for some reason he migrated into Gilead. Josephus, the Jewish historian (Ant. 8:13, 2), however, supposes that Tishbi was some place in the land of Gilead. It has been identified by some with el-Ishtib, a some place 22 miles due south of the Sea of Galilee, among the mountains of Gilead.

I do not think we have a geneology of Elijah, but it appears that even if he were not Jewish by blood, he could have been a "stranger" in the land that had adopted the Jewish God "Jehovah", as his own.

I'm just taking an educated guess at this. I would be hard pressed to believe that a Jew would call anyone who was not a Jew a prophet or even consider dealing with him. All the prophets were sent to the house of Israel not somewhere else so I would have to believe he was a Jew. Now that is just a guess.

He could have been in another tribe of Israel, in that time people did not have to be Jewish to be used by God, they did not have to be in the tribe of Judah, there were other tribes God still choose to use other people in other tribes. If He was from Gilead, He maybe was in the tribe from that area.

Technically, Elijah was NOT Jewish because he was not from the tribe of Judah; only people from the tribe of Judah/Benjamin/Levi can be called Jewish because after Jeroboam/Rehoboam, the kingdom of Israel split into two kingdoms, the 10-tribed northern kingdom of Israel and the three-tribed kingdom of Judah.

Only persons from the kingdom of Judah were called Jewish, while the people from the northern kingdom were Israelites. Since Elijah was probably from Gilead, Elijah was not Jewish but an Israelite.

Here's the puzzle: Not all Israelites are Jews, but all Jews are Israelites.

If I remember correctly Gilead is a part of a prophecy for the tribe that the deer, or hart is used to explain that tribe, I do not remember what the tribe is. I believe that the prophecy is when the prophecy came toward the end of Genesis.
