Isaiah 58:7

Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry

And bring the homeless poor into the house;

When you see the naked, to cover him;

And not to hde yourself from your own flesh?

I will share one application of a fast, as I understand it, and not to draw praise but to glorify God.

As I mentioned, my wife and I work a weekly jail ministry. The Lord has provided us a jail choir that is quite awesome and really rounds out our ministry. Since I have a good relationship with the local Sheriff, he allows me to take the choir out every so often so they can attend our church service and lead us in worship. I usually take out about six guys along with their choir leader and let them have their families meet them there. After church, we take them to our house where we feed them a big dinner and fellowship. My wife and I don't always eat; we are too busy serving them and they and their families have a grand ole' time.

I take the Lord's WORD literally...and when the Lord spoke to Isaiah and said a true fast is sacrifice your meal so you can feed others, I take HIM at His word.

This is an example of a fast.

Isa 58:3 Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.

Isa 58:4 Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.

Isa 58:5 Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?

Isa 58:6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?

Isa 58:7 Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

Seek the Lord and heed the Holy Spirit who will lead you into all truth. I pray you will eat, chew and digest this bread with a cool cup of water, arrayed in white linen. Amen!

Could it mean that a truly humble person recognizes his weaknesses as well as his strengths? Paul did this, did he not...when he wrote of his struggle with the flesh in his letter to the Romans.

My dear brother Matthitjah (whom I love dearly) participates in a minsitry that feeds the homeless. Right in the worse parts of our nation's Capital. I can't say for sure BUT my bet is Dave doesn't go to feed himself but rather to feed and serve the homeless. That is a fast...

You know, every time I serve in that Homeless Ministry God reminds me of that very verse.

Exactly bro. We don't fast for a reward but rather God has given us a tool to connect with HIM on a more deeper level. Praise God!

The proper response was Jeremiah's. He went in Obedience to the Lord and invested in God's plan. He bought a piece of land in the Land. It is his in perpetuity even though he never saw the fruit of his Obedience.

Giving $$$ and food is easy (and needed) but do you have a sick neighbor who could use a dinner cooked for them? How about a homebound elderly person? You know what's fun? Buying the dinner for teh car behind you in the McD's drive-through. Pray and seek God's guidance. KingsCupBearer said it well..."Seek the Lord and heed the Holy Spirit who will lead you into all truth." Simply look for an opportunity. Ask the Lord to open your eyes to the needs of others.
