Italy: American effort in Haiti a 'dismal failure'

Let's examine the "ledger," shall we?

Italy:

The Italian government has prepared a military transport plane which will be used to carry in a field hospital and emergency medical team.

Italy sent the aircraft carrier Cavour with 920 military personnel aboard to Haiti to assist in rescue and reconstruction work. The Cavour sailed from Italy on Jan. 19, with a stop planned in Brazil to pick up Brazilian military medical staff, the Italian military general staff said in a statement. It will transport Italian Navy helicopters, tracked and wheeled Army vehicles, and hospital facilities that offer two operating theaters. A company of Army engineers is included in the contingent, as well as the Cavour crew members and medical staff, and force protection personnel from the Navy, Army and Air Force. Italian Carabinieri military police will also be on board.

Italy will also send a further contingent of 200 members of its military Carabinieri police corps to Haiti to help ensure security for the distribution of aid. The Carabinieri would be part of an EU police force to restore order and end looting on the island.

Now...there are those individuals within the Italian government that cannot handle managing their own personal lives, yet they are more than ready to suggest that a "...single civilian to take charge...". Golly gee, I wonder if they have anyone in mind?

Seeing as the majority of relief/donations/manpower/assistance seems to be coming from our coffers, where is the problem with our managing those resources? After all, should we "trust" a government entity that still has not made payments on loans of over $1.2 billion (in 1950's dollars) made in the late 1940's to early 1950's (60 years ago!) to (mis)manage even more?

I think not...

Chief....what can I say? You've done your homework and, even though I've been watching this stuff as much as I can, I did not know at least half of the scope of U.S. and U.S. territories' aid. Good post!

Btw; I don't downgrade the Italian contributions, the whole world should help Haiti, just this 'Guido' guy's stupid comments.

As long as we support Israel.

We MUST always support Israel but....they aren't in desperate straits like Haiti. It seems the world's interest is already waning and that country is becoming more, not less, desperate by the day.

As long as we support Israel.

We MUST always support Israel but....they aren't in desperate straits like Haiti. It seems the world's interest is already waning and that country is becoming more, not less, desperate by the day.
